Leeds United vs Arsenal - LIVE!

It’s a case of last game standing as Arsenal head to Elland Road to take on Leeds in the Premier League this evening.

Covid outbreaks have seen six matches called off so far in the top flight this weekend, including all five fixtures scheduled for earlier on Saturday, leaving tonight’s game as the day’s sole survivor.

The Gunners will be hoping to take advantage by cementing their place in the top four following a superb midweek victory over West Ham.

Leeds will feel hard done by in that they are probably missing just as many players through injury as most clubs are through Covid, but Marcelo Bielsa’s side desperately need to start picking up points, with Tuesday’s 7-0 thumping at the hands of Manchester City their latest demoralising result and a trip to Liverpool up next.

Leeds 1-4 Arsenal: Martinelli double helps cement top four spot

FT: Leeds 1-4 Arsenal

19:23 , Malik Ouzia

A thumping win for Arsenal. More problems for Leeds.

19:20 , Malik Ouzia

90+1 mins: There’ll be three minutes added on.

19:19 , Malik Ouzia

90 mins: So Arsenal are going to be spending Christmas in the top four - that’s not something that looked likely when they lost their first three games of the season.

Momentum really feels like it’s building for the Gunners.

Simon Collings for Standard Sport

19:15 , Malik Ouzia

Odegaard’s final act is an assist of the highest quality. Arsenal have been poor since the break but that was brilliant from the Norwegian.

GOAL! Leeds 1-4 Arsenal | Emile Smith Rowe 84’

19:13 , Malik Ouzia

Doesn’t matter whether he starts or not!

Smith Rowe scored off the bench against West Ham and he’s done so again as he crashes Odegaard’s delicate through-ball past Meslier.

19:08 , Malik Ouzia

79 mins: Emile Smith Rowe was being prepared just before that goal went in and he is now on, with Bukayo Saka the man to make way.

Simon Collings for Standard Sport

19:05 , Malik Ouzia

Arsenal are punished for some idiotic defending. I am not sure what Ben White was thinking there but it’s given Leeds a glimmer of hope.

GOAL! Leeds 1-3 Arsenal | Raphinha (P) 75’

19:04 , Malik Ouzia

What a penalty this is.

I think Ramsdale is waiting for that Raphinha stutter but the Brazilian just strolls up and absolutely wallops it into the top corner.

19:02 , Malik Ouzia

74 mins: Penalty to Leeds!

Rash from Ben White, who goes sliding in on Gerhardt when the forward really hasn’t got anywhere to go. Stonewall spot-kick.

18:57 , Malik Ouzia

68 mins: That’s the closest Arsenal have come to a fourth since the break. No surprise at the players involved as Saka plays a sharp one-two with Martinelli and whips across goal but a foot wide of the far post.

18:52 , Malik Ouzia

63 mins: Tomiyasu is down now for Arsenal so we’re going to see Cedric Soares for the final half-hour or so. They’ll hope that’s precautionary because the Japan international has been so good since arriving in the summer.

Simon Collings for Standard Sport

18:48 , Malik Ouzia

Arsenal have, perhaps understandably, just dropped off a little after the break. The tempo has gone down and Leeds have been able to stem the flow of goals.

18:48 , Malik Ouzia

59 mins: Dallas is back on which is a relief for Leeds, who are actually enjoying a decent little spell here.

18:47 , Malik Ouzia

57 mins: Stuart Dallas has just been booked for hauling down Tomiyasu on the break, but he’s now down needing treatment and it seems to be a problem with his ribs. They really are having some shocking luck.

18:46 , Malik Ouzia

56 mins: That’s just about Leeds’ best bit of attacking play as they work it down the right and Klich fires across the face of goal but Tomiyasu has tracked the run of Summerville well and just eases him out of the way.

18:41 , Malik Ouzia

52 mins: All getting a bit tetchy now. Gelhardt goes lunging in on Tomiyasu and catches him in pretty much the same place as Xhaka did Raphinha a moment ago. Yellow for the youngster.

Simon Collings for Standard Sport

18:40 , Malik Ouzia

And that tackle - in some fans’ eyes - is what Xhaka should not be Arsenal captain. There was no need to take the risk.

18:39 , Malik Ouzia

49 mins: Ouch. This isn’t clever from Xhaka, with his team three to the good and cruising. He wins the ball but catches Raphinha on the ankle with his follow-through.

VAR is happy with it but the Leeds man is not.

18:35 , Malik Ouzia

46 mins: No changes at the break for either side, though Leeds have already used that one to replace the injured Harrison.

Arsenal are straight back on the front foot with a couple of corners.

18:34 , Malik Ouzia

We are back underway...

18:33 , Malik Ouzia

Right then, the teams are on their way back out. Can Leeds sort themselves out? Because if they don’t, all you can see is more Arsenal goals.

18:26 , Malik Ouzia

Sky Sports are reporting that there has been an allegation made of racist abuse being directed at the Arsenal bench by Leeds fans, which would explain that stoppage.

This was the pick of the bunch...

18:25 , Malik Ouzia

18:21 , Malik Ouzia

Midway through the half there was some sort of incident reported to the referee, Andre Marriner, by the Arsenal bench, with Mikel Arteta and Rob Holding both in discussion with the fourth official.

When that Bukayo Saka goal went in Marriner was very swiftly across to urge the Arsenal players not to celebrate in the corner of the pitch near the Leeds fans. Not quite sure what’s gone on but we’ll update when we hear anything.

Simon Collings for Standard Sport

18:19 , Malik Ouzia

Arsenal had 15 shots, 11 on target, in that first-half. If Leeds don’t change something they could easily ship seven again.

HT: Leeds 0-3 Arsenal

18:18 , Malik Ouzia

Could be anything, this.

18:17 , Malik Ouzia

45+1 mins: We’re playing three minutes of added time. I’d say Leeds need the whistle, but I don’t really know what good it’s going to do them.

Simon Collings for Standard Sport

18:13 , Malik Ouzia

Arsenal have been good here, but what is this defending from Leeds? Robin Koch is following Lacazette around and it’s leaving huge gaps in defence. Arsenal are running riot.

GOAL! Leeds 0-3 Arsenal | Bukayo Saka 42'

18:11 , Malik Ouzia

Game over.

Leeds are just all over the place, no centre-halves in sight, and they cannot clear their lines. Saka is tenacious and eventually gets a strike away, which takes a nick off a defender and beats Meslier at the near-post.

18:05 , Malik Ouzia

35 mins: What are Leeds doing?

They’re robbed on the edge of their own box again and Odegaard plays a one-two with Saka before nudging on to Lacazette. The angle has closed a bit on the Frenchman and Meslier does well again but this is suicidal stuff.

Simon Collings for Standard Sport

18:02 , Malik Ouzia

How about that for composure? It looked like the chance had got away from him, but Martinelli kept his composure there. What a run he is on.

18:01 , Malik Ouzia

31 mins: Marcelo Bielsa looks like he’s been forced into an early change, too, because Jack Harrison has been hobbling after an earlier challenge with Tomiyasu and his evening is done. Crysencio Summerville is on.

GOAL! Leeds 0-2 Arsenal | Gabriel Martinelli 28’

17:58 , Malik Ouzia

How good is this kid?

Rubbish from Dallas, who gifts the ball to Xhaka, then excellent from Xhaka, who releases Martinelli with a laser pass, but from there it’s all about the Brazilian.

He’s got a long way to go and a man on his back but he’s too quick, too good, and lifts cooly over Meslier.

17:55 , Malik Ouzia

25 mins: Massive chance!

From Arsenal’s own corner, Leeds break with one ball over the top and Raphinha is the man to latch onto it. He drives across Tierney and White before trying to reverse it into the near corner but pulls it too much and the ball fades wide.

17:54 , Malik Ouzia

24 mins: It’s so easy for Arsenal at the moment, Leeds are being carved apart. Xhaka slides one inside Raphinha for Tierney and the left-back fires low from the corner of the box but Meslier is down to palm it wide.

17:51 , Malik Ouzia

21 mins: Well, we’ve seen Arsenal go ahead away from home and then retreat on a couple of occasions recently, against Everton and Man United. They must surely sense that Leeds are there for the taking though.

Simon Collings for Standard Sport

17:48 , Malik Ouzia

Martinelli developing into the player everyone hoped he would be. Adding finishing to his pace and skill.

GOAL! Leeds 0-1 Arsenal | Gabriel Martinelli 16'

17:45 , Malik Ouzia

Some finish, this.

Full credit to Alexandre Lacazette, who gets a sharp foot in on Forshaw on the edge of the Leeds box, but when the ball runs loose Martinelli is just so sharp, latching onto it and curling first-time past Meslier to continue his excellent recent run.

He opens the scoring, just as he did against West Ham in the week.

17:41 , Malik Ouzia

11 mins: A first sight of Martinelli’s threat as he gets in behind Drameh - making his first Premier League start tonight - but there’s a bit of miscommunication as Odegaard steps over his pull-back and turns to see, well, no one coming in behind.

Simon Collings for Standard Sport

17:36 , Malik Ouzia

A very bright start from Arsenal and they should really be ahead. Lacazette was a bit sloppy with that finis there, needs to do better.

17:35 , Malik Ouzia

5 mins: And immediately after that, Meslier is forced into another smart stop as Partey finds space on the overlap to test him at his near-post. Bright start from Arsenal, who should be ahead.

17:34 , Malik Ouzia

3 mins: What a miss. Odegaard drives forward and slides Lacazette in - everyone thinks he’s offside but the flag stays down and Meslier does well to deny him.

However, the ball only breaks to Saka, who has pretty much an open goal but doesn’t go at it with conviction on the stretch, as if he, too, is waiting for a non-existent flag and he pokes tamely wide.

17:31 , Malik Ouzia

1 min: It looks absolutely freezing at Elland Road. It’s a foggy, misty evening, too, and the home crowd are bang up for it.

We are up and running...

17:26 , Malik Ouzia

The teams are on their way out, Arsenal clad in those magnificent retro jackets.

Five minutes to go...

Arteta: We have “a few” Covid cases

17:19 , Malik Ouzia

Mikel Arteta has just been on Sky Sports and suggested that Arsenal’s Covid outbreak extends beyond Albert Sambi Lokonga, and that the club had to close their training ground following the win over West Ham.

“We could not train the day after the match, we had to close Colney for a different reason,” he said. “We have a few cases.

“We had quite a lot of the staff members and we had a few players as well.”

Marcelo Bielsa has been speaking to Sky Sports...

17:08 , Malik Ouzia

On needing to bounce back from Man City defeat - “To win is always important, after two defeats even more and after a defeat like the last one even more so.”

On dealing with their injury crisis - “Until yesterday we were more or less organised but then in the penultimate training session [Charlie] Cresswell suffered an injury to his clavicle and from today [Diego] Llorente will be absent for the next ten days at least.

“In the defensive zone there are seven players absent and that forces us to quicken the return of [Robin] Koch.”

Arsenal unchanged

16:55 , Malik Ouzia

So, no Lokonga on the bench for Arsenal but their starting XI remains unchanged from the one that beat West Ham in midweek.

That means that the fit-again Emile Smith Rowe has to settle for a place on the bench, despite his goalscoring cameo against the Hammers, as Gabriel Martinelli’s form sees him keep his shirt.

Lokonga out with Covid

16:44 , Malik Ouzia

Arsenal have confirmed that midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga has tested positive for Covid and is therefore unavailable this evening.

A reminder that this is the only one of the Premier League’s six scheduled matches today that has not been postponed because of the virus.

16:19 , Malik Ouzia

We should have all the team news from Elland Road in about ten minutes’ time...

Standard Sport prediction

16:10 , Malik Ouzia

It is a desperate time for Bielsa’s side, with key players out and no sign of an upturn in form ahead of facing one of the league’s most dangerous sides. Arsenal never seem far from a slip-up but their confidence from Wednesday should guide them to victory.

Arsenal to win, 2-0.

Leeds team news

15:59 , Malik Ouzia

Junior Firpo is banned for Leeds, who are monitoring a number of injury problems. Hamstring issues look set to rule out Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper and Patrick Bamford.

Daniel James (muscle), Jamie Shackleton (Achilles), Pascal Struijk (foot) and Rodrigo Moreno (heel) are unlikely to feature with Robin Koch looking to return from illness.

Arsenal team news

15:44 , Malik Ouzia

Aubameyang is no longer training with the Arsenal first team and Mikel Arteta has confirmed he will not be considered for selection.

The forward is not expected to play for Arsenal again before he returns from representing Gabon at the Africa Cup of Nations, which runs from January 9 to February 6.

Aubameyang was this week stripped of the Arsenal captaincy for what Arteta described as his latest “disciplinary breach”.

Bernd Leno (groin) and Sead Kolasinac (ankle) are also set to miss out while Gabriel Martinelli will undergo tests on a knock suffered in the win over West Ham. Emile Smith Rowe could make his first start after returning from injury via the bench on Wednesday.
