The next film in the Legally Blonde series has finally been given a new release date.

On Tuesday evening (20 October) – the same night that a Legally Blonde 20-year reunion aired – MGM Studios revealed that Legally Blonde 3 is officially slated for release in 2022.

MGM announced the franchise’s return in a Twitter post, which read: “Elle Woods is back! Legally Blonde 3 coming May 2022. We rest our case.” The caption was accompanied by a GIF of the film’s protagonist Elle Woods – played by Reese Witherspoon.

The new date comes long after the film had previously been given a 2020 release of 8 May.

In 2018, a new sequel starring Witherspoon was announced to the delight of fans.

It was reported that the film was scheduled to air in 2020 with Legally Blonde writers Kirstin “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah set to return, however, any further details were kept tightly under wraps.

Earlier this year, the highly anticipated film got two new writers in the form of Mindy Kaling and Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Dan Goor.

The first movie of the franchise follows Witherspoon as a sorority girl who decides to study law at Harvard University in an attempt to get her boyfriend back despite opposition from the other students.

The film became a sleeper hit for MGM when it grossed $141.8m globally in 2001.

A follow-up – Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde – came in 2003, grossing $124.9m globally, with spin-off Legally Blondes being released straight-to-DVD in 2013.

It has not been confirmed whether any of the cast members beyond Witherspoon will be reprising their roles in the forthcoming film.
