After over a year of hope and speculation on the part of Pokémon Go fans, the game's top-tier Legendary Pokémon are finally about to make an appearance.

Niantic Labs – the company behind Pokémon Go – issued a blog post yesterday announcing that the Legendary creatures will debut as part of the game's one-year anniversary celebrations.

The game recently introduced raid battles, where multiple players are invited to cooperate and take on super-strong Pokémon. If successful, players earn the chance to catch one of their own. These raids are indicated by an egg and timer appearing above a gym.

Soon, players will start seeing "Legendary Eggs" above gyms. These indicate that a Legendary Raid Boss is about to appear, giving player the chance to snag one of the ultra-rare Pokémon if the boss is defeated.

Niantic hasn't specified which Legendaries will be appearing first, but we definitely spotted a Zapdos, Moltres and Articuno in the trailer.

Those hoping to use Legendary Pokémon for gym-domination may end up disappointed it seems. The blog post also specifies that Legendaries can't be left in gyms, unlike other Pokémon.

They can, however, be used to attack gyms and take part in raids.

On July 22, Niantic Labs is holding an event called Pokémon GO Fest in Grant Park, Chicago, to launch the first Legendary, as part of the company's continued plans to introduce live events into the game's make-up.

During GO Fest, a Legendary will appear, and if it's defeated, it will begin appearing across the world.

You can watch the action in Grant Park live via YouTube or Twitch, which will include extra interviews and analysis from the Pokémon Go team.
