A prolific nightclub that shaped Cornwall's party scene has confirmed it will be closing down for good. Berties, in Newquay, was once one of Cornwall's most legendary clubs.

As partygoers flocked to the nightclub scene of Cornwall in the 80s and 90s, Berties joined a host of Newquay clubs like Tall Trees, Sailors, Fosters, Disco 5000, Steamers, The Beach, Koola and Red Square - becoming one of the most popular and dubbing the town 'the UK's Ibiza'.

Situated within the 1800s Victoria Hotel on Newquay’s waterfront, it has now been confirmed that the venue has closed permanently with a goodbye party being held in the pub section of the business. It's been reported by Radio Newquay that the hotel has closed, too.

Writing of the closure on its Facebook page, the Irish Bar, most recently called Bertie O'Flannigans, but formerly Berties Bar, said it was "absolutely gutted" about the closure.

It said: "Unfortunately this is the last week of Berties. We will be closing our doors for good from Monday November 25.

"Thank you to everyone for your continuous support over the years. We will miss each and every one of you! Join us for our closing party this weekend and let’s see it out with a bang." Berties Nightclub shared a similar message, although confirming it had already closed down so would not be open this week.

Dozens of punters have already been flooding the post with their memories. One said it was the "end of an era". "Many good nights in dirty Berties in the 00s!" they wrote.

"Wow gutted. I have drank in that pub for 40 years, Newquay will never be the same without Berties," said another. One recalled "great memories" while another said it was "another nail on Newquay's coffin".

The Victoria Hotel, also home to the Bertie's Lodge accommodation, is under the same ownership, as is the onsite Senor Dick's Mexican Restaurant, which is listed as 'temporarily closed' on Google. The hotel's website and social media pages have seemingly disappeared and its future is unclear.

Estate agency Knight Frank, however, has the hotel listed as 'under offer'. The listing describes how the 102-bedroom hotel sale includes the sports bar, night club and themed restaurant opening out onto the main street.
