Leicester City have clinched a striker signing in the final few minutes of the summer transfer window, welcoming Odsonne Edouard to the club on loan from Crystal Palace.

At midnight, after the 11pm deadline but before the 1am cut-off point for business where deal sheets are submitted, City announced the season-long deal for the 26-year-old Frenchman. He gives manager Steve Cooper another option to work with up front as his side battle to avoid relegation.

Jamie Vardy is very likely to still be the club’s main man at the top of the pitch, but now has a new deputy and greater competition, with Edouard available alongside the likes of former team-mate Jordan Ayew. Patson Daka will come back into contention when he recovers from an ankle injury.

City came into deadline day still open to signing a striker, keeping their eyes peeled for potential opportunities. When Eddie Nketiah joined Palace from Arsenal, it opened the door for Edouard to move and City swooped.

They bring in a player they first seriously targeted three summers ago, when he was firing in the goals for Celtic. City were looking for extra firepower for Brendan Rodgers and tried to reunite the manager with a player he had coached north of the border, before they eventually turned to Daka.

Edouard instead moved to Palace that summer. In a tougher league, he’s not been as prolific as he was at Celtic, netting 18 goals in the Premier League over the past three seasons, including seven last term.
