A witness has described how a lamppost prevented a car hitting Leicester City fans on a crowded pavement when it crashed as people walked home from a match. The collision occurred under a railway bridge in Aylestone Road, near to the gas depot, at about 5.15pm on Saturday after Leicester lost 2-0 at home to Fulham, when the pavements were full of hundreds of LCFC supporters.

The man who saw the crash told LeicestershireLive: "I was an eye-witness to a guy nearly crashing his car into hundreds of City fans on the way home. His Mercedes lost control for over 200 yards and only a lamppost stopped him taking out a full pavement of fans.

"The car spun 6ft into the air and missed oncoming traffic and fans. This was nearly another Leicester City FC disaster. It was that close. Four inches of lamppost prevented hundreds of injuries."

"There were no reported injuries. Damage was caused to a lamppost."

No arrests have been made.
