Twelve emerging black artists will take centre stage at a Leicester theatre next month as part of a touring show celebrating Black History Month. The show, titled "And Still I Rise," will feature performances of music, dance, and spoken word.

The show will take place at the Y theatre in Leicester on Sunday, October 13. It will feature several up-and-coming performers and will explore themes of black history, culture, and identity through innovative artistic expressions, organiser 2Funky Arts said.

Inspired by Maya Angelou's iconic poem "Still I Rise", the show aims to explore topics such as resilience, liberation, prejudice, and the celebration of cultural heritage, the company added.

Director Vijay Mistry said: "And Still I Rise is a vital platform for emerging Black artists to share their stories, experiences, and passions. This showcase honours the legacy of black culture and history while amplifying the voices of new talent across the Midlands."

The Leicester show will feature artists including Ashlee Paris-Jabang, Carolina Blu, Edy Muuya Samuels, and Hil the Poet, among others. "It's about celebrating identity and resilience through art in a way that resonates with today's audiences," Mr Mistry added.

Following the Leicester performance, "And Still I Rise" will tour to other Midlands cities, including Birmingham's Midlands Art Centre and Nottingham Arts Theatre. The tour kicks off in Derby on Thursday, October 4 and concludes in Nottingham on Thursday, October 24.

Tickets cost £10 and can be brought on the 2Funky Arts website. Doors for the Leicester show open at 7pm.
