Leicester vs Liverpool LIVE!

Ademola Lookman stunned wasteful Liverpool as Leicester dealt a damaging blow to their title hopes.

The substitute struck to snatch a 1-0 win which ended the Reds’ 10-game unbeaten run and was just their second defeat of the season.

Liverpool should have been 2-0 up before then, Mohamed Salah missing his first Premier League penalty in four years and Sadio Mane blowing an excellent second-half chance.

The Foxes made them pay as Jurgen Klopp’s second-placed side dropped crucial points in the title race to sit six points behind Manchester City.

Victory breathed fresh life into the Foxes as they rose to ninth and five points off the top six after a difficult December which had seen them win just one of their previous six games and drop out of the Europa League.

They still needed Kasper Schmeichel at his best and the goalkeeper - who kept just his second clean sheet since the opening day - ensured they stayed in the game in the first half to earn revenge for their Carabao Cup defeat last week.

Leicester 1-0 Liverpool

The Foxes hold on! Liverpool piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but Leicester and their makeshift defence held on. Brilliant win for them.

Lookman the difference... an inspired second-half substitution.

21:53 , Matt Verri

90+4 mins: Mane wins Liverpool’s 12th corner of the match. Up comes Alisson.... we’ve been here before.

Matip and Firmino get in each other’s way at the back post and it’s headed out for a goal-kick.

21:51 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: This is desperate stuff now. Ball gets played across the face of goal by Jota, and Leicester do so well to head it away at the back post.

Liverpool coming again though...

21:49 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Keita very nearly free in the box, but his shot is blocked. Liverpool keep the pressure on though, and Jota bursts away down the left. Guess what? Liverpool corner.

Leicester head flicks it away, and Milner will take the latest corner. Schmeichel punches this one clear.

Five minutes added on.

21:46 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Leicester desperately hanging on. Milner in behind.... yet another corner.

Mane wins the header, and he flicks it wide. Very close to falling right into the path of Van Dijk who was following it in. Goal-kick though.

21:44 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Salah inside, past one, two, three, four Leicester defenders... Castagne pokes it behind for a corner. Liverpool haven’t been great from these.

Cleared again. Milner puts it back in, falls to Van Dijk at the back post... Schmeichel saves his low effort. Another corner.

21:43 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Better from Leicester, keeping the ball well as the seconds tick away. And that helps... Tielemans wins a cheap free-kick.

They’ll be taking their time over taking this.

21:40 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Alexander-Arnold’s cross is put behind for a corner. Ten minutes or so left for Liverpool to get something from this match.

Tsimikas takes a really good corner, Jota wins the header... puts it wide. Another good chance wasted.

21:38 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Leicester keeping giving it away every time they win it back... putting themselves under a lot of pressure.

Ndidi gives away a needless foul on the touchline, bundling into Mane.

21:36 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Very nearly from Liverpool. Alexander-Arnold into Salah, who has been really quiet in the second-half.

Lifts it over the top and almost into the path of Mane, but just too much on it. Might have been offside anyway.

21:33 , Matt Verri

75 mins: The Leicester striker looks in a lot of pain, really limping. His side have used all their substitutions too.

He’s back on though for now, and looks to be ok.

21:31 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Vardy goes down on the halfway line after colliding with Matip. Didn’t look to be much in it at all.

The Leicester fans are hoping the red card is going to come out... they will be disappointed.

21:29 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Henderson off, Firmino on.

That’s Liverpool’s three subs made. Over to those on the pitch...

21:26 , Matt Verri

67 mins: The Liverpool left-back is flying forward again... Maddison tracks him well and slides in to put it behind for a corner.

He’s injured himself in doing so though. Looks to be holding his calf, and he’ll get some treatment.

In fact he’ll be going off. Replaced by Albrighton.

21:24 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Brilliant from Matip, brings it forward and plays a lovely ball through to Tsimikas. His ball in is not the best though.

Had so much time and space in the box, couldn’t make the most of that chance.

21:22 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Jota drives at the Leicester defence, goes down and wants the free-kick. He’s not getting it. Tielemans gets one though, as Keita brings him down.

Liverpool make another change, Milner replacing Fabinho in midfield.

21:20 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Lookman has looked so bright since coming on, and he’s away again down the left.

Maddison to the near post, Vardy at the back post... slides it through to Maddison, who can’t make anything of it.

GOAL! Leicester 1-0 Liverpool | Ademola Lookman 59'

21:18 , Matt Verri

And it’s a brilliant goal. He cuts inside, cuts back and plays it out to Dewsbury-Hall. Played back to Lookman, into the box and it’s a great finish at the near post. Leicester have the lead.

21:16 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Soumare has to do better, space to pick a pass and set Leicester away but it’s straight to a Liverpool shirt.

Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced by Keita. Lookman and Tielemans replaced Choudhury and Iheanacho for Leicester.

21:13 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Iheanacho thinks he’s away, but Matip is straight across to snuff out the danger.

Mane played through... has to be a goal... NO! Jota plays him in perfectly, it’s a great run but he blazes it over the bar. It’s an absolutely massive chance.

21:11 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Great break from Leicester, Iheanacho and Dewsbury-Hall combining on the left.

The midfielder curls a low ball towards Vardy at the back post... inches away from being perfect. Much better from the Foxes.

21:09 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Alexander-Arnold takes a quick throw and Ndidi is scrambling to get back. He does so, and is strong enough to beat Salah to the ball.

21:06 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Leicester have barely had a touch in the first couple of minutes after the break.

Already the home defence is having to deal with plenty of crosses into the box. Holding up so far.

21:03 , Matt Verri

Here we go, second-half has begun at the King Power.

Will either side find the breakthrough?

21:01 , Matt Verri

11 shots for Liverpool in the first-half, five for Leicester.

The Salah penalty miss and then his effort that was saved by Schmeichel the only two shots on target of the match.

Everyone assumed there would be plenty of goals in this one... not so far!

Schmeichel keeping Salah at bay...

20:56 , Matt Verri

20:48 , Matt Verri

Heavy, heavy fall from Iheanacho. He goes up for a header, Matip leans into him and the striker falls extremely awkwardly. Fortunate to be seriously injured after that, fell straight onto his collarbone.

And that’s half-time. Goalless at the break, but it’s been an entertaining watch. Mo Salah’s missed penalty the biggest moment of the half, with Liverpool the better side but Leicester offering some dangerous moments on the break.

20:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: That was a chance, and Alexander-Arnold is usually much better than that.

Oxlade-Chamberlain sends it wide to the right-back, who goes for the first time cross into the box. He had a lot of time and space, but he makes no real contact.

Liverpool straight back on the attack, Jota scuffs a volley wide inside the box. One minute added on.

20:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Liverpool starting to take back control of the match. Fabinho again stopping the Leicester counter before they can get bodies forward.

Tsimikas’ cross blocked behind for another corner. Liverpool’s fifth. Alexander-Arnold taking over from Tsimikas.

Drops at the far post... for the third time tonight, Henderson goes for a really difficult volley. For the third time tonight, it’s over the bar.

20:41 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Alexander-Arnold again with the switch out wide to Tsimkas. He plays it to Mane, who wins the corner of Choudhury.

Fired into the near post, Salah can’t control and it bobbles behind for a goal-kick.

20:39 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Leicester growing into this now. Dewsbury-Hall and Maddison get the hosts up the pitch, in behind on the right wing.

Iheanacho floats it to Vardy, who knocks it down for Choudhury... can’t get the shot away.

Vardy then shrugs off Tsimikas and he’s away. Plays it through to Maddison, who has more time than he thinks. Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho combine to hack it away.

20:36 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Leicester’s best moment of the match by a mile.

Maddison plays it wide to Vardy, and he combines superbly with Castagne. The strike looks to be clean through, but Matip gets across well to block. Corner Leicester.

Not hugely convincing from Liverpool, but at the third time of asking they clear the danger.

20:33 , Matt Verri

Thomas can’t clear the cross, and it falls to Salah at the far post. Gets the shot away quickly, but the Leicester goalkeeper turns it over the bar for a corner.

Van Dijk nearly gets on the end of it, but Leicester scramble it away.

20:30 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Leicester again give it away in a really dangerous position, and Mane is away down the left.

Early ball across to Jota, who can’t quite control it and get the shot away. He then gives away the foul.

20:28 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Jota free at the back post with a great chance to score, but Schmeichel is out quickly to smother.

Henderson’s flick found his teammate... who was offside anyway.

20:27 , Matt Verri

26 mins: The Liverpool full-back will get another chance now though, in an even better position.

Thomas goes to clear the ball, but Henderson gets there first and the Leicester man kicks straight through the midfielder. This is a really dangerous set-piece.

Tsimikas floats it in, poor ball. Cleared to Henderson, who again goes for the long-range volley... miles over the bar.

20:25 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Dewsbury-Hall puts the pressure on Fabinho who goes down... and wins the free-kick. Leicester not impressed with that decision.

Alexander-Arnold will whip this one in with pace. Not his best, headed away.

20:23 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Liverpool struggling to create anything since that penalty miss, has stalled their momentum now.

That’s very close though. Brilliant ball in from Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson misses the flick in the box but Schmeichel was very nearly caught out at the near post. Just about keeps it out.

That penalty miss...

20:21 , Matt Verri

20:19 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Maddison wins it and Leicester look to break at space. Iheanacho pings it to Vardy, who is faced with five Liverpool shirts.

Cuts inside and tries to play it back to his teammate, but there’s too many defenders in the way.

20:16 , Matt Verri

That is a huge moment!

Salah’s penalty is a poor one, but Schmeichel palms it straight back out into his path. The Egyptian heads it back at goal... loops onto the bar, drops into the six-yard box and Leicester somehow scramble it away.

How has that stayed out?!

20:15 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Lovely switch from Alexander-Arnold sends Tsimikas away down the left. Gets into a really good position but the ball in isn’t the best.

Doesn’t matter now though... PENALTY LIVERPOOL!

Salah jinks past Soumare and Ndidi sticks a leg out... definite penalty.

20:11 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Leicester very much do not need moments like that. Soumare under pressure deep in Leicester’s half, and he passes it straight to Mane. The Liverpool forward wins the corner.

Whipped in and Matip gets the header at goal, but it loops over the bar.

20:10 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Ambitious volley from Henderson 25 yards out. Catches it sweetly enough but it flies over the bar.

Liverpool then try and play a ball through to Salah, but Thomas gets across well and sees it out of play for a goal-kick.

20:07 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Alexander-Arnold plays it into Mane, who holds it up well and he’s allowed to turn as Jota makes the decoy run on the outside.

Mane gets the shot away, but Amartey is there to get an important block in.

20:06 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Maddison is desperate to find room for the shot on the edge of the box, unsurprisingly full of confidence already.

He eventually lays it off to Soumare, who sends his effort well wide. Bright start from Leicester.

20:05 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Tsimikas plays a wonderful ball into the box... drops to Jota, but his effort is blocked.

Leicester try and break through Iheanacho, Matip dangles out a leg and brings the striker down. It’s a very early yellow card for the centre-back.

20:04 , Matt Verri

3 mins: First nervy signs at the back for Liverpool, but the offside flag then goes up anyway.

Amartey plays the ball over the top, and both Iheanacho and Vardy are offside as they run onto it. Sign of what Leicester’s gameplan will be, targeting Liverpool’s high-line.

20:02 , Matt Verri

1 mins: It’s like he’s never been away... 20 seconds into his return and Van Dijk plays a big sweeping pass out to the right. Perfect.

Liverpool with the early pressure, looking to test this makeshift Leicester backline right from the off.

Leicester kick us off and we are underway at the King Power!

19:57 , Matt Verri

Players are in the tunnel, almost time to get underway.

Leicester will fancy their chances of causing Liverpool some problems. The Foxes have scored plenty of goals recently, while Klopp’s side looked vulnerable against Tottenham in their last match.

The issue for the Foxes is at the back, where they’ve looked extremely weak and they aren’t helped tonight in terms of key absentees.

Jurgen Klopp on Leicester’s threat

19:51 , Matt Verri

“Iheanacho and Vardy have played incredible stuff together up front in the past.

“But obviously Maddison is a connector for the different departments. We should not let him shoot! Don’t let him pass, don’t let him shoot.”

Easier said than done...

Brendan Rodgers’ pre-match thoughts

19:45 , Matt Verri

“You look to write your own story and off the back of a tough game it’s a huge challenge. We’re at home so we’ll give it our best.

“From a defensive perspective we have to be really strong. You know you will suffer against Liverpool. They are a top team with lots of quality but we have shown we can cause teams problems.

“You can’t give away silly goals. If you can do that, stay strong and play with energy, you know you can score.”

19:40 , Matt Verri

Less than a week since these two sides last faced each other.

That was in the Carabao Cup, and it finished in a 3-3 draw. Minamino scored a stoppage-time winner to send it to penalties, with Jota scoring the winner in the shootout.

Think we’d all settle for another six goals tonight...

19:33 , Matt Verri

Minamino and Thiago both miss out with minor muscle soreness for Liverpool, rather than any further Covid concerns.

It’s Van Dijk’s 150th appearance for the Reds tonight... his Liverpool career has gone pretty well so far.

How it stands...

19:28 , Matt Verri

Liverpool are currently second in the table, six points behind Man City. Guardiola’s side have played a game more than the Reds though.

A win tonight would close that gap, ahead of City’s clash with Brentford tomorrow night.

Leicester are down in 11th after a below-par first few months of the season. Three points tonight though could life them up to eighth, with mid-table very tightly bunched.

Visitors have arrived...

19:18 , Matt Verri

19:11 , Matt Verri

Five changes for Leicester then, from the team that lost 6-3 on Boxing Day. Biggest concern for them looks to be at centre-back... Ndidi and Amartey the pairing.

Vardy returns to the starting lineup, while Maddison also starts - he was impressive against City a couple of days ago.

For Liverpool, Van Dijk and Fabinho return from their Covid absence, while Tsimikas as expected comes in for the suspended Robertson.

19:02 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Schmeichel, Castagne, Amartey, Ndidi, Thomas, Dewsbury-Hall, Soumare, Choudhury, Maddison, Iheanacho, Vardy

Subs: Ward, Daley-Campbell, Nelson, Vestergaard, Albrighton, McAteer, Tielemans, Lookman, Perez.

19:00 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Tsimikas, Fabinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson, Salah, Jota, Mane

Subs: Kelleher, Konate, Milner, Keita, Firmino, Gomez, Jones, Beck, Williams

18:56 , Matt Verri

Five minutes until we get team news from the King Power.

Always tough to predict lineups over Christmas... even more difficult with all the uncertainty over Covid cases.

Kelechi Iheanacho excited about tonight’s challenge

18:48 , Matt Verri

Stage is set...

18:40 , Matt Verri

18:33 , Matt Verri

With Leicester having been battered only a matter of hours ago and missing some key individuals, Liverpool will surely have too much.

The Foxes showed they can be dangerous in attack, but that came after they were blown away early in the first-half. Jurgen Klopp’s side will be similarly ruthless if Leicester show such slack defending again.

Liverpool to win 3-0.

Leicester team news

18:22 , Matt Verri

Leicester, meanwhile, will be missing Ricardo Pereria, Patson Daka and Caglar Soyuncu for the next few weeks and were already without a number of big players due to Covid.

Brendan Rodgers also gave an update on Jamie Vardy and Wilfried Ndidi, who both missed the Man City defeat.

He said: “It was too big a risk (to play against City). They were suffering with tightness after (the Liverpool cup game).

“Wilf has played a lot of football for us, so he hasn’t had a chance to rest, and Jamie, like I said the other night, he couldn’t really run in the last half-hour, so to put him in (the City game) game would be really, really tough.

“But hopefully they’ll be fine and recovered for Tuesday night.”

18:09 , Matt Verri

Liverpool will have Virgil van Dijk, Curtis Jones and Fabinho back in their squad ahead of the trip to Leicester City on Tuesday night.

The trio missed the club’s last Premier League outing, a win over Newcastle United at Anfield, while Thiago Alcantara is out of isolation too.
