Leroy Sane scored on his debut and Serge Gnabry struck a hat-trick as Bayern Munich ran riot with a thumping 8-0 win at home to Schalke on the opening day of the new Bundesliga season.

After sealing a historic treble with a Champions League triumph over Pairs Saint-Germain in August, the German champions made the perfect start to the campaign to send out another stern warning to their domestic rivals.

Sane was handed his debut after completing a £44.5million move from Manchester City, scoring his first goal alongside two assists as Bayern extended their unbeaten run to 31 games, including 22 successive wins.

Schalke finished in 12th place in the Bundesliga after a poor run following the restart, with the humiliating loss rendering them win-less since January.

It took an in-form Gnabry just four minutes to open the scoring, firing an exquisite curling strike into the top-left corner following a ball over the top from Joshua Kimmich.

Schalke found themselves two down after just 19 minutes as Leon Goretzka drove a shot low past 'keeper Ralf Fahrmann, before Robert Lewandowski made it three before half-time to become the first player to score in 10 successive games against the same Bundesliga opponents.

Bayern emerged from the break in fearsome fashion as Gnabry added another two in just 15 minutes, with Sane providing the assists for both.

After Muller volleyed in Lewandowski's 'rabona' assist to make it 6-0, Sane then finished a swift Bayern counter-attack to bring up his first goal for the club.

To cap off a perfect night for the prolific Germans, substitute and former Chelsea youngster Jamal Musiala, 17, became the youngest-ever Bayern scorer in the Bundesliga with a fine solo effort.
