Levi Bellfield Guilty Of Milly Dowler Murder

Nightclub bouncer Levi Bellfield has been convicted of abducting and murdering schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

It's Bellfield's third murder conviction and makes him Britain's newest serial killer.

He lured 13-year-old Milly into his flat as she walked home from school, killed her and later dumped her naked body in a remote wood where he used to walk his dog.

Milly's mother and sister Gemma, 25, collapsed after hearing the verdict at the Old Bailey.

Police mistakes let Bellfield, 43, avoid capture and destroy vital evidence.

The violent predator went on to stalk and murder two young women and tried to kill a third before he was arrested.

In standard house-to-house inquiries detectives called at Bellfield's flat 11 times until they got an answer. By that time he had moved and officers didn't bother to find out where he had gone.

The Chief Constable of Surrey Mark Rowley is to apologise for the failings to the families of his later victims.

Bellfield's conviction brings to a close one of Britain's most notorious unsolved murders.

Milly - real name Amanda - vanished in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on a Spring afternoon in 2002.
