A heartbreaking new video of Liam Payne being taught Spanish by fans outside hotel hours before histragic balcony fall has emerged. Going viral on Twitter, now X, the clip shows the 31-year-old ITV The X Factor star interacting with fans.

The interaction came just hours before Liam, who hailed from Wolverhampton, plunged to his death. In the video, a female fan handed him her phone and asked if he would sign the back of it but upon realising Liam didn't have a pen, the woman asked those around her.

It prompted Liam to ask: "How do you say pen in Spanish?" The group then called out "lapicera", to which Liam laughed: "I feel like you're trying to make me say something rude." In a statement signed “Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry”, Payne’s former band members said: “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing” before adding “We will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly”.

In a separate post, three-time Grammy winner Harry Styles described how Payne “will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life”. “I will miss him always, my lovely friend,” he added. Payne’s family also released a statement on Thursday saying they are “heartbroken” at his death.

Ed Sheeran has said he is at a “loss for words” and encouraged others to “be kind” following the death of Liam, 31. The singer-songwriter shared his tribute to Instagram alongside a black-and-white photo of Payne smiling.

He wrote: “At a loss for words. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones, every memory I have with him is a great one, just such a heartbreaking situation. Be kind. X” And boyband JLS have said former One Direction star Liam was like their “original fifth member”.

In a social media post on Thursday, JLS, who were runners-up on the ITV show’s fifth series, said: “We are so shocked and saddened to hear the news this morning that Liam Payne has passed. We first met on The X Factor in 2008 and we thought we’d share the experience together but it wasn’t to be.

“Liam was like our original fifth member and we always knew he’d go on to achieve great things. To have lost a brother of ours so young is devastating and we will fondly remember the joy and the hope and the happiness he brought to so many people’s lives.

“Our hearts go out to his mum and family, his little boy and all those around the world who will miss him so very deeply. Gone way too soon brother, Rest in Peace.”
