Liam Payne has spoken about the arguments he has with Cheryl over their son, days after it was reported the celebrity couple are on the rocks.

Payne, 24, gave fans an insight into their private lives as he took over from Vicki Hope to co-host the Capital FM Breakfast Show with Roman Kemp.

Payne, who has 11-month-old Bear with the former Girls Aloud singer, said they are struggling to agree on which football team their son should support with Payne a West Bromwich fan and Cheryl a Newcastle United supporter.

Speaking on Monday morning’s show, Kemp asked: “Bear, your son, is he going to be a West Brom fan?”

Payne replied: “Well, this is the thing, I mean Cheryl’s not really that massively into football but she will [want him to support Newcastle].

“Well everyone likes to bring up where they’re from when this happens, isn’t it, it’s like ‘oh well I’m from here so I’m gonna do this’.”

He continued: “So it’s like battle of the grandads at the minute, and he’s going to have a tough little choice on his hands at some point because you’re going to have to disappoint some grandparents.

“Or he’ll just have to go ‘you know what, forget this, I like ice hockey’. Pick a different sport.”

Payne’s comments come as it was reported he has sought legal advice from divorce lawyers on how to protect his £54 million fortune, as well as allegedly discussing arrangements for Bear.

A source told The Sun: “Liam has sought some legal advice but he still wants to make it work. It’s sensible to be prepared for all options.

“With a young son and a number of assets between them there is more to breaking up than just parting ways. He hopes it doesn’t come to it but he’s just being careful.”

Payne’s travelling is said to be the reason for the alleged strain in their relationship, with the singer spending most of the past six months on the road to promote his new music.

Standard Online has contacted representatives for Payne and Cheryl for comment.
