Liam Payne has revealed that One Direction were "touch and go at every single show" before Zayn Malik's departure.

The 'Strip That Down' singer was a part of the iconic five-piece band that lost a member in 2015 with the exit of Zayn and went on indefinite hiatus later in 2016.

Speaking recently, Liam opened up about cracks first appearing in the band, as a non-stop schedule of touring while also hiding out from overzealous fans left a lot of the band's members at breaking point.

"It was a point where every day, you didn’t know whether it was going to be the end," Liam told The Guardian.

"It was so touch and go, at every single show. I was slowly losing the plot."

Also during the interview, Liam also opened up about how the suffocating nature of touring led him to turn to alcohol.

"Doing a show to however many thousands of people, then being stuck by yourself in a country where you can’t go out anywhere – what else are you going to do?" he said.

"The minibar is always there."

The comments follow Liam admitting there are still grudges within One Direction to this day.

Harry Styles also recently said that the band "didn't realise" Zayn wasn't happy before he left the group.
