‘Liar Liar’ song about Theresa May soars to number two in iTunes download chart

A song brandishing Theresa May as a ‘liar’ has climbed up the charts just weeks before the General Election.

‘Liar Liar GE2017’ by Captain Ska, criticises the Prime Minister’s policies on the NHS, education and poverty.

The damning song was released on Friday and by Monday had reached number two in the iTunes singles chart.

The song has gained attention for its cutting lyrics, which features the chorus: ‘She’s a liar liar, you can’t trust her, no, no, no.’

The anti-Conservative pop song was first released in 2010 during the student protests opposing the Government’s hike in tuition fees.

At the time, it attacked Nick Clegg and David Cameron, but now the song lyrics have been rewritten to coincide with next month’s election.

The song features sound bites of Theresa May, while the lyrics attack the party over its policies.

"When there's nurses going hungry and schools in decline I don't recognise this broken country of mine" is just one of the scathing digs.

Now people are taking to social media to campaign for the song to reach the top spot in the charts.

“The 2010 release has kind of been around for a while and I ended up getting so many messages to remix it I thought I’d do it,” a member of Captain Ska told HuffPost.

“It’s overwhelming to be at number two now, we’re all freelance session musicians in London, so we’re totally amazed by it.

“Original music, and especially political music, doesn't have traction any more. Everyone is totally over the moon with it.”

In the wake of the song’s success, many UK radio stations are declining to include the song as part of their chart music downloads, as this would breach impartiality rules laid down by Ofcom.

All proceeds from downloads of the song, meanwhile, will be split between food banks around the UK and The People’s Assembly Against Austerity.
