Lidl trolls John Lewis Christmas advert by poking fun at prices – and department store fires back

Supermarket chain Lidl has poked fun at the 2018 John Lewis advert on Twitter, and the high street chain has fired back.

The long-awaited John Lewis Christmas advert was released on Thursday, illustrating the career of much-loved singer Elton John.

The advert tells the touching story about Elton receiving his life-changing gift of a piano for Christmas as a boy.

The advert has been widely praised by many on social media, with some hailing it as an “absolute triumph”.

And Lidl were joining in the discussion, by suggesting music lovers could buy a cheaper keyboard from the store.

The supermarket said: “Just because you don’t have £872 to spend on a piano, doesn’t mean you can’t be the next Elton”

It also tweeted an image of the store’s own keyboard, which costs £89.99.

John Lewis hit back, from the company’s Twitter account, and said: “It’s a Lidl bit cheaper”, sharing a link to a ‘My first piano’ product, costing £15.

The reply was commented on by scores of people, with one user just writing: “scenes”.

Another wrote: “Boom! Good comeback!”

While Vicki Haxton wrote: “Loving this. Come and join the party Ebay, have you got a cheaper one?”
