Food enthusiasts and culinary experts might be taken aback, but a jar of sauce can be a lifesaver when you're pressed for time and need to whip up a tasty family meal.

Many people will opt to cook a curry from scratch, but the list of ingredients can be overwhelming (and most of them end up being discarded after a few weeks). During a rushed shopping trip at Lidl this week, reporter Amy Fenton was short on time.

She had around seven minutes to complete her shopping and pick up her daughter from school in very heavy rain. So, she opted for convenience and grabbed a jar of Lidl's Deluxe Butter Chicken (£1.49).

Her 'curry night' shopping list also included a 1kg pack of chicken thighs (£2.85), naan breads (£0.69p for two), natural yoghurt (£0.79) and deluxe mango chutney (£1.69) for dipping. This is what Amy Fenton had to say about her Lidl chicken curry:

The meal could have served four people (with any leftovers saved), making it a very reasonable £1.80 per person. The cooking instructions are incredibly straightforward.

First, brown the chicken, then add the spice tub from the top of the jar, and after 30 seconds, pour in the sauce and cook until the chicken is tender. I added my own twist to this by only searing the chicken thighs for colour before adding the jar, then baking it at 160C for about 45 minutes.

This method gives you a crispy skin and succulent meat. There might be culinary purists who would never consider using a jar of sauce. However, this butter chicken was one of the most delicious curries I've ever had.

And believe me, I've tried quite a few. The chicken was cooked perfectly, the naan breads were simultaneously soft and crunchy, the yoghurt provided a cooling effect, and the chutney added a fruity and spicy kick to the meal.

I dare anyone to make a better curry, at the same price, in such a short amount of time.
