As anyone who’s ever worked in a customer-facing role can confirm, the public aren’t always pleasant.

One waitress has found the opposite to be true, however, after a kind-hearted customer gave her a huge tip - and a precious reminder that life is far too short.

Becky Nielsen, a waitress at The Breakfast Spot in Cohoes, New York handed over the $22.08 bill to her customer on 20 May and received a whopping $77.92 tip in return.

The customer also wrote a moving message across the top of the bill: “Life is short, a friend of mine died last night. Please enjoy a night with someone you love!”

The restaurant shared a picture of the bill on their Facebook page and it has since gone viral, receiving nearly 1,000 likes and more than 300 shares.

They wrote: “This is the kind of stuff you only read online, but it happened this morning in our restaurant from a loyal customer.

"Congratulations to our server Becky, and a big special thanks to our customer’s generosity.”

Waitress Becky posted the bill on her own Facebook page, writing: “A young woman left this tip for me today and I’ve been on the verge of tears ever since.

"Her friend must have been a lovely person to inspire generosity in the wake of tragedy. Go hug your friends, everyone.”

One of her Facebook friends commented: “She was 26. I knew her as well, life is way too damn short.”

Becky replied: “God, I’m sorry - it’s too awful to even comprehend.”

The restaurant has refused to reveal the customer’s identity, saying: “We do not know whether or not the customer wants to be identified, or if they prefer to do their good deeds in secrecy, so at this time, until granted permission, we won’t be releasing the customer’s name.”

In the meantime, let’s all pay it forward, people.
