Britney Spears was right not to be impressed by the thought of Lifetime's TV movie about her career.

Telling the story of her rise to fame as a teenager as well as her public struggles with her mental health, Britney Ever After aired on Lifetime in the US last night (February 18) and was absolutely savaged on Twitter.

"Oops.. Lifetime did it again... and created another trash biopic of an absolute legend," wrote one user, with another adding: "Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake should sue Lifetime for this trash."

Ouch.

One thing that seemed to really anger those watching was the attention to detail, or rather the lack of it, in the biopic.

Taking inspiration from current US politics, many accused the makers of the TV movie of "alternative facts" and messing up iconic Britney moments.

Still, at least Lifetime had one celebrity watching along as Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, was live-tweeting as she viewed.

"Who lit this movie #britneyeverafter and why does he hate women?," she wrote in one post. Oh...

We're not going to lie though, this short, excruciating clip makes us want to watch it.

Britney Ever After receives its UK premiere next Sunday (February 26) at 9pm on Lifetime. See you there?
