Lightning Strikes CN Tower in Toronto

A lightning strike hit the CN Tower in Toronto, as seen in footage posted shortly after midnight on September 15 by Moazzama Shaikh.

As the tallest building in Toronto, the CN Tower is stuck by lightning 75 times a year on average, according to the tower’s website.

The tower is well prepared for lightning strikes, its website says, as a series of copper strips run its length. These feed into grounding rods underneath the tower, allowing the electric charge from a lightning strike to diffuse into the ground. Credit: Moazzama Shaikh via Storyful
