Lightning Suspected Cause of Fire That Ripped Through Apartment Building in Wisconsin

A lightning strike was believed to be the cause of a fire that tore through a 42-unit apartment building in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in the early hours of Friday, September 13, reportedly displacing more than 100 people.

Residents of Hillcrest Apartments at Shepherd Court said they heard a boom before the fire alarm went off, according to local reports.

The Waukesha Fire Department said residents had reported a lightning strike and the fire around the same time, and later said “initial signs indicate the cause to be related to the storm activity.” At least one person needed to be rescued, reports said.

The American Red Cross established a shelter to help displaced residents.
