Lily James, Alicia Vikander and Sam Smith 'join star-studded Four Weddings sequel'

The Comic Relief sequel to the much-loved rom-com Four Weddings and a Funeral looks set to be very star-studded indeed, with Lily James, Alicia Vikander and Sam Smith reportedly added to the bill.

The Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again star and the Oscar-winning actress will play a couple tying the knot. James has been cast as Miranda, the daughter of Hugh Grant’s character Charles, while Vikander will play a woman named Faith.

Photos from the set show James and Grant waiting outside a church as they prepare to film the wedding scene, with the actress wearing a bridal gown embellished with feathers.

Smith, meanwhile, will reportedly play a wedding singer, and is set to cover Elton John’s Chapel of Love.

“They’re chuffed to get Sam on board for this. He’s always more than happy to do his bit for charity, and this is an iconic remake for a good cause,” a Comic Relief insider told The Sun. “His cameo won’t be massive, but viewers won’t miss him.”

“The team have kept his involvement under wraps, as although they’re keen to build some hype around the release, they want a few surprises too.”

Standard Online has reached out to their representatives for comment.

The short film will also bring back the cast of the 1994 film, with Andie MacDowell, Kristen Scott Thomas, Anna Chancellor and Rowan Atkinson all returning for the one-off special.

Screenwriter Emma Freud, whose partner Richard Curtis wrote the original film, confirmed news of the sequel earlier this month. She shared behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot with her Twitter followers, including snaps of celebrity extras Susanna Reid and Tanya Burr.

On Monday, she confirmed that the project had wrapped, describing it as “a miraculous shoot” with “the best cast, the cleverest script, and the most amazing venue.”

The 1994 film was directed by Mike Newell, and followed Grant’s character Charles as he embarks on a will they, won’t they romance with Carrie, played by MacDowell. Made in just six weeks, it launched Grant’s film career and picked up five BAFTAs.

One Red Nose Day and a Wedding will air on March 15 2019.
