State pensioners in certain UK regions are poised to receive a complimentary £250 payment following the loss of their Winter Fuel Payment from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). North East Lincolnshire Council has reinstated its Household Support Fund, which is open to residents over 16 who are most in need, assisting with expenses such as food, energy, and other household bills, as well as broader essentials.

The funding, provided by the DWP, comes after the new Labour Government expanded the scheme. Each household can claim up to £250, but must demonstrate that they lack sufficient income for basic necessities like housing costs, utility bills, and food.

The fund can also aid those struggling to pay for broader essentials, including broadband or phone bills, clothing, and essential transport costs. Eligibility requires proof of an income under £20,000 and savings below £500, supported by documents like bank statements, Birmingham Live reports.

The local authority has announced that the programme will continue until 30 September 2024, or until the allocated funds are exhausted. Critics have labelled the fund a mere "plaster" over the Cost of Living crisis, yet it has been extended by the Labour Party despite the Conservatives' initial plan to conclude it at the end of this month.

The council stated: "The Household Support Fund has been allocated to Councils by the Department for Work and Pensions. It is to help provide financial support to those most in need because of significant cost of living pressures."

They also affirmed their commitment by saying, "The council is committed to ensuring that as much of the funding as possible is spent in our community supporting those who need it the most."
