Linda Hamilton is returning to the Terminator franchise more than 25 years after her last appearance as Sarah Connor.

The star became an icon playing the action heroine in 1984's The Terminator and its 1991 sequel Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

However, she will reunite with creator James Cameron (who she was briefly married to) and the Terminator himself Arnold Schwarzenegger for the sixth movie in the franchise, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

"As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it's going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she's become return," Cameron said at a private event.

"There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys," he added of the slate of older action stars, "but there isn't an example of that for women".

The new Terminator is set to be helmed by Deadpool's Tim Miller and is based on a story by Cameron, who will be on producing duties.

A writer's room was set-up by the pair to plan out a trilogy, involving the likes of The Dark Knight's David Goyer, Dark Angel's Charles Eglee and The Sarah Connor Chronicles' Josh Friedman, and the movie is planned to act as a direct sequel to Judgement Day.

"We're starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story," Cameron added.

"We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we'll have Arnold and Linda's characters to anchor it."
