Line of Duty has announced who will play AC-12's next adversary.

Kelly Macdonald – who has starred in TV shows such as Boardwalk Empire, The Victim, and Giri/Haji, as well as Oscar-winning film No Country for Old Men – is starring as Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Davidson in the sixth series.

The BBC has teased that Joanne's unconventional conduct will raise suspicions as the senior investigating officer of an unsolved murder.

Macdonald will star alongside returning cast members Martin Compston, Vicky McClure, and Adrian Dunbar, with filming scheduled to start next year.

"We're honoured that Kelly Macdonald will join Martin, Vicky, and Adrian in series 6 of Line of Duty," showrunner Jed Mercurio said. "DCI Joanne Davidson will prove the most enigmatic adversary AC-12 has ever faced."

Little is known about series 6 right now, but Mercurio mysteriously hinted at "secret guest stars" recently and Compston weighed in on the possibility that Superintendent Ted Hastings could be the show's ultimate villain.

Mercurio added that he was hopeful the show would return before the end of next year.

Line of Duty airs on BBC One. Series 1-5 are available on boxset now.
