New crime drama series Traces starring Line of Duty's Martin Compston and Breaking Bad's Laura Fraser has finally received an official air date.

And you don't have to wait too long now, folks, as the series will premiere on Alibi on Monday, December 9.

The six-part UKTV original series is written by former Coronation Street star Amelia Bullmore (who's also writer and star of Scott & Bailey) and follows the lives of three different female characters – Emma Hedges (Molly Windsor), Professor Sarah Gordon (Laura) and Professor Kathy Torrance (Jennifer Spence) – who come together to investigate an unresolved murder case.

"When Emma Hedges (Windsor) returns to Dundee to start her new job as a lab technician, she's encouraged to take part in an online course teaching the principles of forensic science," the synopsis begins.

"Given a fictitious murder case, her task is to identify the victim and establish how they died. But having completed the first module, Emma knows exactly who the victim is: her mum."

Emma's mum Marie Monroe (Carly Anderson) was murdered when Emma was seven and the case was never solved, but now, years later, Emma has the opportunity to get to the bottom of her mother's death, turning to chemistry professor Sarah Gordon (Fraser) and forensic anthropology professor Kathy Torrence (Spence) for answers.

As Emma reconnects with her dad Drew, as well as her childhood friend Skye and her mum Izzy, while also falling for the "gentle and irresistible" Daniel (Compston), her search for answers only uncovers more and more secrets.

Soon, it becomes clear that Emma should trust no one – but Sarah and Kathy's exacting minds encourage Emma's faith in the science to help her crack the case as they seek to bring Emma's mother's killer to justice.

The drama also stars Laurie Brett, John Gordon Sinclair, Michael Nardone and Vincent Regan.

Traces airs on Monday, December 9 on Alibi.
