Autopsy confirms Linkin Park star had drugs in system

UPDATE: Medical examiners have concluded in an autopsy that Chester Bennington had traces of both alcohol and MDMA, a form of ecstasy, in his system at the time of his death on July 20.

Bennington had reportedly been in an outpatient treatment program in the days before he tragically died from suicide, according to TMZ.

ORIGINAL: Chester Bennington's death has been tragically ruled a suicide, an LA coroner confirmed today (July 21).

The Linkin Park vocalist was sadly found dead on Thursday, July 20 at the Palos Verdes Estates in Los Angeles by a housekeeper and was initially being treated as a possible suicide.

News of Chester's death was confirmed by his Linkin Park bandmate Mike Shinoda in a tweet last night.

"Shocked and heartbroken, but it's true," he wrote. "An official statement will come out as soon as we have one."

Bennington was best known as the frontman and one of the principal songwriters for Linkin Park, the Grammy Award-winning group who influenced a generation of aspiring hard rock bands.

Linkin Park reached the top of the US charts with their albums Meteora, Minutes to Midnight, Living Things and this year's comeback record One More Light.

Only two weeks before his tragic death, Bennington was on stage with Linkin Park for two headlining gigs at the O2 Academy Brixton in London and Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham.
