Roads near a Renfrewshire industrial estate were locked down earlier today due to “bomb fears”.

Police and the Scottish Ambulance Service were called to Burnbrae Drive in Linwood just before 9am.

The discovery of a suspected “old ordnance device” was made at the Malcolm plant with the bomb squad being called to attend. It is understood staff at the plant were evacuated as a precaution.

A source told the Paisley Daily Express: “Traffic at that bit of Linwood is always a nightmare but it was absolutely mental with the roads being closed. Police had blocked off the roundabout with a cordon for a couple of hours.

“You hear the word bomb and you automatically panic so everyone nearby in the shops and stuff was a bit on edge but thankfully it was one of those old-style bombs.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.05am on Tuesday, September 24, police were called after a device – thought to be an old ordnance device – was found in Burnbrae Drive, Linwood.

“As a precaution, a cordon was placed around the area and one local business was evacuated.

“The EOD [Explosive Ordnance Department] attended and the device was safely removed from the area. Staff have been allowed to return to their work and local roads are now open.”

There were no injuries as a result of the incident. The Scottish Ambulance Service stated: “We received a call today at 9.55am to attend an incident on Burnbrae Drive, Linwood, and dispatched our special operations team (SORT) to the scene.”
