It's widely known that when Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, announced they'd be stepping away from their senior royal roles, there were rumours of a feud between Harry and William. Of course, none of those stories were ever confirmed by the brothers or any public, royal-affiliated sources, so we're choosing to take it with a pinch of salt. Ditto rumours they're no longer as close as they once were (well, in fairness, The Sussexes do literally live half a world away from The Cambridges now, so naturally they'd be spending less time together... especially when you add in a pandemic).

So, with that scene now set, can we please ask you to cast your mind back to March of this year (before any of us really understood coronavirus, or how serious it could be)? The 9th of the month marks a now-momentous occasion: the last time Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, were seen publicly with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

All eyes were on the foursome that day and royal fans quickly became eager to speculate about the group's interactions. Now, a lip reader has revealed (in a new book by historian Robert Lacey, Battle of the Brothers – which, we note, hasn't been authorised by any royal family members) what William supposedly whispered to Kate during the televised event.

Now, before you start speculating that it was a dig about Meghan's outfit (to be clear, 1) this is obviously a joke and 2) her outfit was flawless and cannot 👏 be 👏 critiqued 👏), we're happy to tell you it doesn't involve The Sussexes at all.

Instead, Lacey writes that William's "longest coherent sentence that TV-watching lipreaders could work out" was focussed on the looming pandemic. Which is entirely fair enough, if you ask us! According to his book (as reported by The Sun), William said to Kate: "This whole handshaking thing is weird. We're going to have to put a load of hand gel on after this."

He's a wise one, isn't he, that William? And may we all take this as a welcome reminder to never let our hand sanitiser supplies dry up.
