Sadiq Khan has said that he plans to expand London's Superloop of express bus services. The network began launching its legs last year, and now provides Outer London residents with more express services to important transport centres that stop fewer times.

Now, the sequel, dubbed 'Superloop 2', will be consulted on, and Transport for London (TfL) is now going through responses to the proposed new routes from the public.

The Mayor of London's office says the original network has been a success, with Superloop buses being used 15 per cent more than average.

A new map, released during the mayoral election campaign on April 19, said the expansion would include the following routes:

  • Harrow to Barnet via Edgware

  • South Havering to Leytonstone via Romford

  • Hounslow to Hammersmith

  • Streatham to Eltham via Catford

  • Ealing to Kingston via Richmond

Mr Khan told the London Assembly on May 29 that he has asked TfL to 'investigate additional Superloop routes'. "That work is underway," he added, "and a number of possible routings have been identified. TfL is expected to announce public consultation when a detailed proposal or proposals have been sufficiently developed.

TfL plans 'improvements to normal bus network'

The mayor also said that, alongside the initial work on Superloop 2, TfL will 'continue to improve the Outer London bus network with new routes, extensions and re-routings, and increased frequencies, in key areas'.

These include:

  • Haringey Heartlands, Park Royal, Osterley, Tolworth, Southall and Havelock Estate

  • Wanstead and Whipps Cross Hospital

  • Kidbrooke Village

  • Orpington and Brent Cross

In addition, Mr Khan told London Assembly Members: "TfL will soon be consulting upon a new route between Golders Green and Stamford Hill. It will also be exploring new approaches to increase bus ridership, introducing new bus lanes and improving facilities such as shelters and customer information.

"TfL will also launch the final route of the first phase of Superloop, with the SL4 beginning when the Silvertown Tunnel opens in 2025, creating river crossings with the nearby Blackwall tunnel and providing a bus every three minutes."

Public consultations for the Superloop 2 routes will appear here over the coming months.
