The second season of Élite has only just dropped on Netflix, but school's already back in session for season three.
Back on August 29, Diego Avalos (the director of Spanish Netflix Originals) announced that the teen drama had been renewed before season two even aired (as reported by Variety).
This news probably didn't come as much of a surprise to anyone who's actually seen the hit Spanish export. Season one of Élite was watched by over 20 million household accounts in its first month of release last year and the hype for this show has only grown more in the time that's passed since.
The first two seasons of Élite contained more drama than Gossip Girl and Riverdale combined, so join us as we head back to Las Encinas for season three and figure out what happens when Spain's brightest students venture even further into darkness.
Élite season 3 release date: When will it air?
So far, Netflix have revealed Élite will definitely return for a third season, but they haven't told us when exactly.
Just like the students of Las Encinas, the streaming giant is pretty good at keeping secrets, but we wouldn't be surprised if the show's release schedule follows a similar pattern to previous seasons.
Season one premiered on October 5 2018 and season two dropped less than a year later on September 6 2019, which leads us to think that season three of Élite is likely to appear around a similar time in 2020.
With that early renewal, it seems almost certain that shooting for the third season will start soon as well, which means we won't have to wait long before fans worldwide can head on back to Spain to uncover some juicy new secrets.
Élite season 3 cast: Who will be in it?
For a while there, it seemed like Élite season two would end in a similar fashion to season one — with the death of a major character. However, in a surprise twist that not even seasoned fans of Élite saw coming, the season two finale revealed that Samuel (Itzan Escamilla) is actually alive and well, unlike Marina (María Pedraza), who's still very much dead.
With that major revelation, it became clear that everyone from season two will probably return in season three, including original cast members such as Lu (Danna Paola), Carla (Ester Expósito), Polo (Álvaro Rico), Nadia (Mina El Hammani), Ander (Arón Piper), Guzmán (Miguel Bernardeau) and Omar (Omar Ayuso).
Season two also introduced three new additions to the cast who will continue to play a vital role on the show moving forward: Cayetana (Georgina Amoros), Rebeca (Claudia Salas), and Valerio (Jorge Lopez). The season two finale hinted that Cayetana in particular will take centre stage in Élite's third season thanks to her involvement with Polo.
Élite season 3 trailer: When will it land?
Filming hasn't started yet for Élite season three, but check back here regularly for the new trailer once it arrives.
In the meantime, enjoy watching the cast play "Never Have I Ever" in the clip above. Sure, it's less dramatic than the game played on screen in season two, but let's face it: nothing's as dramatic as Élite itself.
Élite season 3 plot: What will happen?
The ramifications of Marina's murder were still felt throughout season two and they'll continue to cause waves when the show returns for season three as well.
In the season-two finale, everyone discovered that it was Polo who killed one of Spain's elite students, so it seems almost certain that season three will focus on the school's reaction to this news and a renewed search for justice.
Guzmán and Samuel in particular will have a personal interest in this given their close connections to both Marina and Polo.
Whatever happens, let's just hope that Christian (Miguel Herrán) makes a full return in future episodes. While it sort of made sense that his character was sidelined in season two for plotting reasons, it's about time that this original cast member was given his due once again moving forward.
One thing we can guarantee is that Ander and Omar — or #Omander, as they're known online — won't be leaving anytime soon. The fan-favourite couple worked through a lot of their issues in season two, and it seems likely that their relationship will continue to play a big, adorable role in season three.
Élite seasons one and two are now available to watch worldwide on Netflix.
