A US doctor who said he performed an abortion in defiance of a new Texas law is being sued by two people seeking to test the legality of the state's near-total ban on the procedure. Former lawyers in Arkansas and Illinois have filed lawsuits against Dr Alan Braid, who in a weekend Washington Post opinion column, became the first Texas abortion provider to publicly reveal he violated the law that took effect on 1 September. Prosecutors cannot take criminal action against Dr Braid, because the law explicitly forbids that.

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Britain's Prince Andrew has been served with a sexual assault lawsuit in the United States by lawyers for a woman who says she was forced to have sex with him at the London home of a friend of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, court papers show. In a filing with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, lawyers for Virginia Giuffre said they sent the civil lawsuit to the prince's Los Angeles-based lawyer Andrew Brettler by email and FedEx, and both copies had been received by Monday morning. Under federal rules, the Duke of York has 21 days to respond or could face a default judgment.
