When Neffi Walker's daughter, Nile, left to spend a summer in California, Walker knew she had to do something special for her daughter upon her return. A designer and founder of The Black Home, Walker decided to revamp her daughter's stark childhood bedroom into a "big girl" room specifically designed to accommodate schoolwork, sleep, play, and, above all, mental well-being after months of at-home learning and consecutive days spent in the same space.

In only six days, Walker, with the help of a contractor and friend, completed a full renovation, knocking down a wall that had previously joined her former office and daughter's bedroom to offer more space, then repainting, decorating, and even building a custom bunk bed.

The goal for Walker was to create designated sections in her daughter's room, whether for learning or playing, to "help make the transition easy when working and learning from her room." Spatial organization, Walker believes, especially in such uncertain times, is essential for a child's emotional wellbeing.

"Although it was important to factor in a place for school into her room, the most beneficial thing was to focus on mental stability, as we know kids can become pretty agitated when confined to single space all day," the designer tells House Beautiful. And with so much time spent at home during this last year, the bright colors, geometric wall coverings, and a cozy workspace was the perfect antidote to the restlessness that has become all too familiar this year.

But perhaps the best part of this colorful renovation isn't the design itself, but Nile's reaction to her new digs. In an adorable video posted to Walker's Instagram (see below!), Nile slowly opens the door, pauses, and lets out the most glorious, excited scream, before falling to the ground in what can only be described as genuine gratitude. "I really love what I do," Walker writes in her caption. And we think it's safe to say that Nile really loves her new room!

Now excuse me while I watch this video on repeat and happy cry.
