The 2017 BRIT Awards celebrated the very best in modern pop, rock and grime on Wednesday (February 22), but the true star of the night was the late David Bowie.

Just over a year after Bowie tragically passed away from cancer, his final record Blackstar earned him both Best British Album of the Year and Best British Male Solo Artist at the annual gala.

The posthumous awards provided the ceremony with two of its most poignant moments, when Michael C. Hall - star of Bowie's musical Lazarus - and the singer's son Duncan Jones collected the trophies.

"Last year I lost a dad but I also became a dad, and I've been spending a lot of time thinking: what would I want my son to know about his granddad?" Duncan asked viewers.

"I think it would be the same thing that most of my dad's fans have taken on in the last 50 years - that he's always been there supporting people who think they are a little bit weird, or a little bit strange, or a little bit different, and he's always been there for them.

"So this is for all the kooks, and all the people who make the kooks. So thanks BRITs, and thanks to all his fans."

It was also a huge night for Little Mix, who opened the show with 'Shout Out to My Ex' and later won Best British Single of the Year for that same track.

While the seemingly-endless One Direction hiatus stretches into its second year, we got a very brief appearance from Liam Payne to accept the Best British Video Award for 'History' on their behalf.

"This is amazing, thank you so much," Liam said as he was handed the trophy by mentor Simon Cowell.

"I know I speak on behalf of the rest of the boys when I say we can't believe we're still winning these and the sheer devotion that are fans have shown us is absolutely amazing.

"We've been taking some time out and working on our solo material but One Direction is who we are and who we'll always be. This one's for you."

The international male, female and group trophies were given away to North American powerhouses Drake, Beyoncé and A Tribe Called Quest, but none of them showed up to collect. Neither did Adele when she received the Global Success Award.

The night also included its share of live TV disasters involving Katy Perry's tumbling dancers, some accidental nudity during Robbie Williams's show-closing set and fears that the show had been hacked!

Luckily, Dermot O'Leary and Emma Willis avoided any disaster themselves as they presented live on ITV from The O2 in London.
