Roberto Firmino scored a stoppage time winner to give Liverpool a huge win on their return to European action, after it looked like they had thrown away a two goal lead against Paris Saint-Germain.

Firmino came on off the bench just four days after suffering a horrible looking eye injury against Tottenham, to secure a 3-2 win for Jurgen Klopp’s side in their Champions League opener.

It was a strange game at Anfield, one which excited and entertained, without its biggest stars – the likes of Mbappe, Mohammed Salah and Neymar – producing anything like their best.

Liverpool started brightly, and after a spell of early pressure, took the lead when Daniel Sturridge planted a header past Alphonse Areola after a terrific first-time cross from Andy Robertson.

James Milner then doubled the lead from the penalty spot, after Bernat had foolishly tripped Georginio Wijnaldum inside the box.

However, just as the Reds looked like they might be about to run away with it, Thomas Meunier reacted fastest in the penalty area to finish low past Alisson and reduce the deficit, though replays showed Edinson Cavani had been offside in the build-up.

Liverpool thought they'd added a third just before the hour mark, but the referee belatedly ruled out Salah's goal for a foul by Sturridge on Areola.

Saido Mane wasted a great chance to seal the deal, and almost immediately PSG found a leveller out of nothing, with Salah giving the ball away to Neymar in midfield.

Though van Dijk intervened, the ball broke to Mbappe, who had been pretty much anonymous, but finished clinically.

But just as it looked like the spoils would be shared, substitute Firmino fired low across Areola to earn all three points for Liverpool.
