Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has heaped praise on Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster for helping him through his recovery from a serious knee injury.

The England international tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the 5-2 win over Roma in last season's Champions League semi-final in April and is hoping to return before the end of the season.

Brewster, 18, joined him on the sidelines when his recovery after surgery on injured ligaments in his ankle took longer than expected.

As a result, the promising youngster has been forced to miss the first three months of the season when he was tipped to join the first-team squad - but it means Oxlade-Chamberlain has had some company as he recovers from his long-term injury.

"You're just sort of left in a silent room doing your gym and it's those moments that are the most difficult ones, especially when it's a long process and it's going to be like this every day," he told Liverpool's TV channel.

"So it's nice to have a younger lad that I can sort of guide through it as well. Rhian's been brilliant, he's a great lad and I don't really have to tell him too much.

"A lot of the time he's checking on me, I'll be honest.

"He's always so positive and he's just got that youthful enthusiasm about him which is really going to have around, it keeps me going.

"I had injuries when I was a similar age to him and because I know these things, I can keep pushing him.

Brewster is expected to return to training in December, leaving Oxlade-Chamberlain to recover in the physio room as he sets a target of May for his comeback.

And the 25-year-old is keen to see his team-mate thrive if given the chance by manager Jurgen Klopp.

"[It's] so selfish of him to get himself back out on the pitch and leave me in here!" he joked.

"But I'm glad to see him pushing on now, he's going to be getting closer [to the first team] and I look forward to seeing what he can do on the pitch."
