Liverpool discover transfer pathway to three dream signings as 'contact' made for £25m deal
Liverpool could see a dream transfer scenario play out on the way to Sepp van den Berg sealing a permanent Anfield exit. The versatile defender spent last season on loan in Germany at Mainz with 36 appearances made and three goals scored.
During the summer transfer window, his former loan club, Wolfsburg and PSV Eindhoven have all shown an interest but their advances were turned down with Arne Slot keen to give him a chance in pre-season. Following that, Van den Berg featured for 155 minutes ahead of the 2024/25 season, though it looks like his future will be elsewhere.
Along with Joe Gomez, the 22-year-old was left out of the squad named to face Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday. Newcastle have already shown an interest in Gomez and now a Premier League club have emerged as the frontrunners for Van den Berg.
Brentford are strongly considering Van den Berg with a permanent departure close to being sanctioned and in the region of Liverpool's £25million asking price, as per the Athletic. However, the Netherlands international could be returning to Germany with Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen also interested.
As per Sky Sports Germany, Leverkusen have made contact with Liverpool and are now working find to an agreement. If Xabi Alonso's side win the race for his signature, that could open the door for further deals to be sanctioned between the two clubs.
Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Pierro Hincapie have all been linked to Liverpool with the chance to complete a deal for one of the three increasing. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are both very interested in signing Wirtz next summer with Frimpong mooted as an option by Manchester United.
While deals for that duo will likely take place in the future, Hincapie could be on the move in the final 10 days of the window. The 22-year-old has previously been of interest to the Reds and is certainly back on their radar given his desire to embark on a new challenge.
With Gomez and Van den Berg both facing permanent departures, Liverpool could make a formal move to sign the Ecuador international over the coming days if the appetite is there.
