Liverpool may face competition from Real Madrid for the signing of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.

The summer transfer window is yet to officially open and yet the Reds are already being linked with a move for several potential new signings. One player who has been credited in some reports as a possible Liverpool target is Wirtz.

The versatile midfielder helped Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title under manager and former Reds star Xabi Alonso. It's such form that has seen Wirtz linked with a big-money transfer this summer, although reports in the past have suggested that a move may not be possible this summer.

According to German outlet Sport Bild, Real Madrid do have an interest in signing Wirtz and plan to make their move in 2025. It has been stated that the La Liga giants will hope to sign Wirtz and bring Alonso to the club as manager to replace Carlo Ancelotti in 12 months' time.

Liverpool have previously been mentioned as showing an interest in signing Wirtz, but Real are thought to be keen to add the playmaker to their squad a year after signing Kylian Mbappe. The report states that Wirtz could cost €130 million (£110 million) for any club interest in signing him next summer.

It was back in March that Wirtz's agent, who is also his father, addressed the Leverkusen star's future. Wirtz's representative outlined the commitment that the 21-year-old has for the Bundesliga club and why he enjoys working alongside Alonso.

"Florian has a contract in Leverkusen until 2027," Hans-Joachim Wirtz told Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger back in March. "That is roughly how long he will stay at Leverkusen.

"There's no answer what will happen when. We should wait for the next two years and then we'll see what happens."

"Florian is very lucky to have Xabi Alonso, who brings a lot of qualities," Hans-Joachim Wirtz added. "He has a great relationship with the whole team. It's the right coach at the right time."
