Liverpool FC 2-0 Burnley LIVE! Jota and Mane goals - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Liverpool vs Burnley - LIVE!

Liverpool made it consecutive wins to start the new Premier League season on Saturday.

Following the comfortable 3-0 victory over Norwich on opening weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s side triumphed again in front of the first full crowd seen at Anfield since March 2020.

Diogo Jota has two goals in as many games after heading in Kostas Tsimikas’ first-half cross, with the three points sewn up courtesy of a brilliant team goal involving Virgil van Dijk, Harvey Elliott and Trent Alexander-Arnold that was expertly finished off by Sadio Mane.

18-year-old Elliott made his first Premier League start for Liverpool, who gained revenge for January’s shock 1-0 defeat by Burnley that ended their long unbeaten home run at 68 matches and sparked a dreadful sequence of six straight home defeats for the first time in club history.

Captain Jordan Henderson also returned on a positive day for the Reds, who host Chelsea on Merseyside next weekend.

For Burnley, their sixth successive season in the top-flight has brought opening back-to-back losses ahead of a Carabao Cup clash with Newcastle in midweek.

Jordan Henderson speaking to BT Sport

“It was the result (we wanted).

“The performance was good at times, there are still places where we can improve of course.

“Overall we are delighted, it was great to have the fans back, they gave us a lift and we got the result and that is the most important thing.

“It keeps you going at times, the emotional side of it. Football was totally different last season without a crowd and now we have got the fans back in it is a different ball game and hopefully we can keep our fortress, if you like.”

Full-time

Liverpool 2-0 Burnley

14:27 , George Flood

93 mins: Burnley attempt to reduce the deficit deep into second-half stoppage time, but Alisson is there again with another fine stop to preserve his clean sheet!

14:22 , George Flood

90 mins: Firmino tests Pope again before shouts of handball are waved away.

At the other end, sloppy play from Thiago lets in Rodriguez, but it’s a super tackle from Van Dijk to avert the danger.

14:19 , George Flood

86 mins: Mane can’t flick home a third after Elliott combines well with the speedy Salah, who then shoots well wide from outside the area.

Tsimikas takes a knock but quickly comes back on. Joe Gomez preparing to come on for Liverpool now.

Alisson stretches to deny Barnes... a stellar save! But the offside flag was up.

14:14 , George Flood

83 mins: More patient build-up from Liverpool, but in the end Alexander-Arnold’s fizzing strike is straight at Pope.

14:10 , George Flood

80 mins: Firmino and Thiago enter the fray for Liverpool.

Keita and Jota off.

14:09 , George Flood

75 mins: Anfield in fine voice as the offside flag denies Barnes.

Firmino’s arrival is imminent for Liverpool.

14:05 , George Flood

73 mins: Two looks like it will quickly become three here, with only some dogged and last-ditch Burnley defending keeping the rampant Reds at bay.

A change up front from Burnley as Wood is replaced by Jay Rodriguez.

Salah bends an effort wide of the far post after beating Taylor.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-0 Burnley | Sadio Mane 69'

13:58 , George Flood

69 mins: There it is! What a brilliant, flowing move from Liverpool.

Van Dijk arrows a pass out to Elliot, who takes a touch before cutting inside and finding Alexander-Arnold with the outside of the boot.

Alexander-Arnold plays a superb first-time pass to Mane, whose spinning finish offers Pope no chance.

A fine, fine goal. Game over?

13:57 , George Flood

65 mins: Dominant Liverpool are having all of the ball and laying siege to Burnley’s penalty area at the moment, but no key second goal to show for all that pressure thus far.

13:55 , George Flood

63 mins: Jota clashes with Barnes inside the Burnley box, but nothing doing after a VAR check.

Cork then clatters into the Portuguese, but again there’s no question of a penalty.

Alexander-Arnold then pings in another cross towards Mane, who can’t generate the necessary power on his header and it’s easily gathered by Pope.

13:52 , George Flood

61 mins: A stooping Pope unconvincingly denies Mane after fine work from Tsimikas! A lovely turn from Mane there to work space for the shot.

Burnley are hanging on here...

13:50 , George Flood

60 mins: Lowton concedes possession very cheaply inside the Liverpool half and the Reds are quickly away, with Henderson releasing Elliott down the left flank.

His cross is chested down by Salah, who shakes off Taylor before seeing a goal-bound strike blocked brilliantly by McNeil.

A crucial, crucial intervention to keep this at 1-0.

Now Taylor with a vital block of his own! Committed defending from Burnley.

13:48 , George Flood

57 mins: Alexander-Arnold gets a standing ovation as he goes over to take a Liverpool corner that is volleyed by Van Dijk.

The ball deflects off Taylor and Mane and out for a goal kick.

Did that actually touch Mane? He wants another corner, but Mike Dean not having any of it.

13:47 , George Flood

55 mins: Alexander-Arnold and Jota do well to combine and tee up Mane inside the Burnley box, but Lowton won’t give him any space whatsoever in which to produce a clean finish and it’s wide.

Pope then comes racing out of his area to deal with a long ball into the right channel intended for Salah, but the offside flag is up anyway.

13:44 , George Flood

53 mins: Mee and Tarkowski are up for a Burnley corner as usual, but it’s imperious defending from Van Dijk to rise clear, head away and ensure Liverpool quickly evacuate the penalty area.

How glad Klopp must be to have the Dutchman back in the heart of his defence.

13:43 , George Flood

51 mins: Tarkowski receives a fair bit of attention before going off, having a swig of water and heading straight back on.

A Liverpool attack breaks down just as Roberto Firmino heads out on a warm-up...

13:41 , George Flood

50 mins: Tarkowski looks to have sustained a heavy blow to the face here during some typically strong defending and will need treatment.

13:37 , George Flood

46 mins: GOOAA.... NO!

Burnley come out of the blocks firing but Barnes is miles offside as he sweeps home a low cross beyond Alisson.

His celebration in front of the Liverpool fans is cut short!

Second half underway

13:35 , George Flood

Back off and running at Anfield!

Klopp will be eager for Liverpool to put this game to bed as quickly as possible.

13:31 , George Flood

Another long-standing Anfield record for Burnley to break? Seems very unlikely at this stage... but you never know!

Half-time

13:21 , George Flood

Liverpool 1-0 Burnley

Chances for both sides, but Diogo Jota’s header from a Kostas Tsimikas cross is what separates them at half-time.

Mohamed Salah’s fine finish after a superb Harvey Elliott pass on the latter’s first Premier League start was ruled out by VAR for a narrow offside.

Dwight McNeil impressive for Burnley.

13:20 , George Flood

47 mins: Liverpool are getting a touch sloppy in possession heading into the break and an irate Klopp lets his players know about it.

13:19 , George Flood

45 mins: Not quite sure what Alisson was playing at there as Tarkowski gets a free run to the edge of the Liverpool box to rise and try to connect with a long free-kick.

The Brazilian comes to try and punch clear, but gets outmuscled and fails to register anything on the ball and is relieved to see it trickle wide.

Two minutes of added time signalled at the end of a highly watchable first half.

13:16 , George Flood

42 mins: Henderson - who has been influential on his return to the starting lineup - sends Salah chasing an enticing lofted ball forward, but Mee spots the danger early and gets across to clear.

Liverpool pressing for a second goal before half-time here.

13:15 , George Flood

40 mins: 8-2 in terms of attempts in favour of Liverpool as we head towards the interval.

Elliott scuffs another before Salah’s bending effort is headed away bravely by Ben Mee, with Matthew Lowton back on the line just in case.

13:12 , George Flood

37 mins: Liverpool spring forward on the counter following some solid defending from Van Dijk to thwart Wood after more McNeil trickery.

Henderson’s ball in towards Jota is punched clear with authority by Pope before Keita fires well over the crossbar.

13:09 , George Flood

35 mins: Jack Cork and Charlie Taylor keep Salah at bay twice in quick succession, the first time after a great run and pull back from Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool certainly haven’t been short of chances in this first half.

13:07 , George Flood

33 mins: Despite being behind, Burnley have acquitted themselves well during this opening half an hour or so and aren’t afraid to get forward and ask questions when the opportunity presents itself - with McNeil particularly sharp.

A corner from the left is punched away by Alisson and the whistle blows for a Liverpool free-kick.

13:06 , George Flood

13:04 , George Flood

30 mins: Close again for Liverpool!

The Reds are quickly back in possession after the ball bounces off Wood and Keita finds Alexander-Arnold, who picks out the brilliant run of Sadio Mane with a perfect lofted ball.

Mane is away from Taylor, but the ball hits his shin on the stretch and goes over the crossbar.

NO GOAL

13:01 , George Flood

27 mins: It’s tight, but it is offside.

1-0 it remains.

13:00 , George Flood

26 mins: A super move from Liverpool and a defence-splitting pass from Elliott to find Salah, who bends the ball first time around Pope and into the bottom corner.

Anfield erupts once again, but I think this is going to be ruled out for offside after a VAR check...

12:56 , George Flood

22 mins: Pope dives to his right to push Salah’s attempt around the post, before Van Dijk heads Tsimikas’ corner over the top.

Plenty of chances early on at Anfield.

12:55 , George Flood

20 mins: Burnley have been on the front foot since going behind, applying sustained pressure, with Alisson alert to deny the lively McNeil at the front post.

Also an effort wide from Tarkowski.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Burnley | Diogo Jota 18'

12:51 , George Flood

18 mins: Deadlock broken at Anfield!

Naby Keita lays off for Tsimikas, who has plenty of time to pick out a decent cross from the left flank.

Jota fools Burnley’s centre-backs with some deft movement before glancing an excellent header beyond Pope and into the far corner.

12:50 , George Flood

17 mins: Burnley look confident when they do get forward, with Barnes just failing to pick out Gudmundsson and Joel Matip heading away.

The Clarets come again, with Alisson taking no chances with Wood’s front-post header from a McNeil cross and appeals for a penalty waved away by Mike Dean.

12:48 , George Flood

15 mins: Salah and Elliott combine nicely in and around the Burnley box, with a chipped ball into the middle then headed clear by Tarkowski.

The visitors soaking up a fair deal of pressure just at the moment, as you would expect.

12:47 , George Flood

11 mins: Nice and positive from Elliott despite those early knocks as he drives forward down the right and earns a corner off Taylor.

Burnley defending stoutly just at the moment as a ball aimed towards Virgil van Dijk at the back post is claimed by a stretching Pope.

12:43 , George Flood

9 mins: Neat build-up from Burnley, with McNeil lofting the ball behind looking for the run of Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who is barged over by Tsimikas and stays down in need of treatment.

Dyche is incensed with no free-kick from referee Mike Dean.

12:42 , George Flood

7 mins: The fans on the Kop clearly feel Nick Pope is taking time-wasting liberties already as he is whistled while taking a drink before his goal kick.

Sean Dyche is already in animated discussions with the fourth official down on the touchline.

12:41 , George Flood

6 mins: Quick feet from Henderson and Alexander-Arnold gets free down the right flank, but it’s solid defending from Charlie Taylor and the ball deflects back off the Liverpool man for a goal kick.

Elliott in the wars here early for the hosts - Burnley are clearly eager not to let him build up ahead of steam.

12:38 , George Flood

4 mins: A big scare for Liverpool as Wood lays the ball back for Dwight McNeil following a searching cross from the right.

McNeil’s low effort deflects off Alexander-Arnold and onto the far post, but the offside flag is up.

Wouldn’t have counted anyway.

12:36 , George Flood

3 mins: Early intent from Burnley with a quick ball into the box, but Chris Wood is offside so lets it go and Alisson can easily collect.

At the other end, Josh Brownhill flies into Harvey Elliott and Trent Alexander-Arnold has a chance to deliver an early free-kick into the box.

Diogo Jota heads well wide at the back post.

Kick-off

12:33 , George Flood

We are underway at Anfield!

Can Liverpool make it impressive back-to-back wins to start the new Premier League season, or will it be another productive trip to Merseyside for Burnley?

Let’s find out...

12:32 , George Flood

A mosaic is displayed by the Kop and Jordan Henderson lays a wreath on the centre circle as Liverpool pay tribute to Andrew Devine, the 97th victim of the Hillsborough disaster.

12:29 , George Flood

You’ll Never Walk Alone belts out as the Liverpool players make their way from the tunnel onto the pitch.

Superb atmosphere at Anfield.

12:25 , George Flood

Judging by social media, there are still a lot of Liverpool fans queuing up outside, waiting to get inside Anfield.

Looks like a fair few are going to miss kick-off at this rate.

Still a fantastic atmosphere inside the ground, though.

How brilliant is it to have full crowds back?!

12:21 , George Flood

Less than 10 minutes until kick-off at Anfield.

Tributes will continue before kick-off to Andrew Devine, the 97th victim of the Hillsborough disaster who passed away in July aged 55 as a result of the life-changing injuries he suffered in the disaster.

Westwood and Vydra injured

12:03 , George Flood

Sean Dyche has confirmed to BT Sport that Ashley Westwood - who had started each of Burnley’s last 61 Premier League matches - is absent this afternoon with a toe injury.

Czech striker Matej Vydra is also not involved for Burnley due to an unspecified knock.

Two Burnley changes

11:51 , George Flood

Sean Dyche has also opted for two changes to his Burnley starting XI.

In come Josh Brownhill and Ashley Barnes, with no Ashley Westwood at all and Jay Rodriguez on the bench.

Among Burnley’s other substitutes is teenager Owen Dodgson, who is handed a place in the Clarets’ senior matchday squad for the very first time.

Elliott, Henderson start for Liverpool

11:48 , George Flood

So the headline team news from a Liverpool perspective is a start for 18-year-old Harvey Elliott, who impressed in pre-season and on loan at Blackburn last season.

Captain Jordan Henderson is also fit enough to start, with deputy James Milner missing out with a slight knock and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also absent after starting last week.

Roberto Firmino remains on the bench with Diogo Jota staying in that front three alongside Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, while record signing Ibrahima Konate is still waiting for his debut.

Thiago Alcantara, Andy Robertson and Curtis Jones are deemed fit enough for a strong-looking bench, with Kostas Tsimikas keeping his spot at left-back.

They couldn’t do it again... could they?!

Klopp vs Dyche

11:10 , George Flood

As well as Liverpool’s shock, record-ending defeat, the clash between these sides at Anfield back in January also featured no shortage of animosity between the two managers.

Tempers flared in a tunnel confrontation at half-time as VAR investigated an on-pitch scuffle involving Fabinho and Ashley Barnes, who went on to score the match-winning penalty.

Both Klopp and Dyche quickly brushed off that heated bust-up as nothing out of the ordinary... will they be back on friendly terms this afternoon?

Dyche encourages Burnley to attack

11:03 , George Flood

Sean Dyche is under no illusions as to the difficulty of the task facing Burnley today, but they do have a decent record of high-profile away scalps in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons.

And it appears that he believes attack might be the best form of defence this afternoon...

“I don’t think our win there last time will make us more optimistic, we caught them at a very good time and we played very well,” Dyche said.

“Last season they had some injuries, lost (Virgil) Van Dijk who is a Rolls-Royce player, and we maybe caught them at a slower period and earned the right to win a game.

 (PA)
(PA)

“That is the equation you need. We will have to have the same equation, but there is no guarantee of doing that again.

“It is about how many attacking options you can find and how many different ways you can attack, or attack enough, to put doubt in the opposition.

“It is not an easy task but that is certainly part of our intention on Saturday.”

Klopp welcomes back fans: ‘We’ve missed you like crazy'

10:44 , George Flood

In his programme notes today, Jurgen Klopp offers a warm welcome back to fans at Anfield, saying the club has missed them “like crazy”.

The German writes: “Good afternoon and welcome back to Anfield for our Premier League game against Burnley.

“You have no idea how good it feels to say that. Welcome back! And a full welcome. A full Anfield. With a full away support. Football is back and it’s wonderful.

“Last week against Norwich City was a big learning experience for us. We didn’t start the game well and I’m sure a part of that was us all adapting to the ‘new’ environment we face with the return of capacity attendance.

 (AFP via Getty Images)
(AFP via Getty Images)

“It was helpful for us to have the two home friendlies before the campaign got under way and it did serve as a measure of re-acclimatising. But nothing compares to when it’s for real. And that will be today.

“For a start, the dynamic today is different because Burnley have their people here also. That changes things.

“We have the power and belief to make this season very special. But what makes this place special is the appreciation of the journey. A friend of mine who is closer to the fan culture than I could ever profess to be, said to me that people support Liverpool not because they are glory hunters but because they are journey hunters. I love this sentiment.

“Our 2021-22 journey is under way and we should enjoy every second of it. Not because we know we will have success or we expect it – but because we chase it together, as a collective.

“It feels like an adventure again and that is a wonderful sensation after so long apart. Welcome back – we’ve missed you like crazy.”

Predicted Burnley XI

10:31 , George Flood

Meanwhile, it seems plausible that Burnley - who lined up in a 4-4-2 system with Jay Rodriguez and Chris Wood up front against Brighton - could look to pack the midfield today and deny Liverpool space to operate.

Our predicted XI for the Clarets sees Rodriguez make way for Josh Brownhill.

Burnley (4-5-1): Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Gudmundsson, Westwood, Cork, Brownhill, O’Neil; Wood

Predicted Liverpool XI

10:24 , George Flood

Here’s how we expect Liverpool to line up this afternoon, with Kostas Tsimikas keeping his place at left-back and Diogo Jota keeping Roberto Firmino on the bench.

The below XI shows one change from the side that brushed aside Norwich, with fit-again captain Jordan Henderson replacing deputy James Milner in midfield.

Liverpool (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson, Keita; Salah, Jota, Mane

Klopp confirms Salah contract talks

10:19 , George Flood

Ahead of today’s visit of Burnley to Anfield, Jurgen Klopp confirmed Liverpool are indeed in talks over a new deal for Mo Salah.

The Egyptian star is currently contracted until June 2023 and last week became the first player to score on five Premier League opening weekends.

“I am involved in pretty much everything in the club,” said Klopp on Friday. “Maybe some talks happen without me but I know about all the things and it’s how it always is.

“We don’t really speak about these kind of things [contract negotiations]. I know we changed that a little bit with Hendo [Jordan Henderson], but that doesn’t mean we will talk from now on and tell you about each little step we make in any negotiations.

“But two things: Mo is obviously in a really good moment football-wise, mood-wise, and how he behaves from the first day he came back is absolutely great. We’re all adults, we’re all professionals, there are talks and when there is a decision we will tell you.

“Until then it is only important how the parties work together. With two years left you can imagine there are talks and that is it.”

Standard Sport prediction

10:10 , George Flood

On opening day, Liverpool showed no signs of a hangover from their difficult failed title defence that saw them finish third and 17 points adrift of champions Manchester City last term.

The returns of Van Dijk, Matip and Gomez were a massive boost after last season’s wretched defensive injury crisis and Salah was in irresistible form as Norwich were firmly dispatched after a bright start, with two assists and a goal to his name.

Burnley, by contrast, absolutely threw away three points against Brighton and will have taken a sizable early knock to their confidence as they look to secure top-flight survival once again.

Liverpool to avenge their record-ending defeat in January with another comfortable victory here.

Burnley team news

10:10 , George Flood

Burnley will have an unchanged squad for the trip to Anfield. Midfielder Dale Stephens and defender Kevin Long both missed the opening-day defeat to Brighton and they will remain absent as they continue their recoveries following surgery.

Phil Bardsley is fit again after his hernia operation and the full-back will hope to play, having been a substitute last weekend.

Liverpool team news

10:03 , George Flood

With the likes of defensive trio Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip already back in the fold, Liverpool could be further boosted today by the returns of key midfielders Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara, who are both in contention after featuring in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa.

However, Fabinho is absent following the death of his father and Andy Robertson is still working his way back from an ankle injury, so Kostas Tsimikas should keep his place at left-back.

Curtis Jones could also return to the squad after concussion, while Klopp faces a selection headache in the final third with Diogo Jota and substitute Roberto Firmino both on target against Norwich on opening weekend alongside the excellent Mo Salah.
