Liverpool star sends clear Anthony Gordon message as transfer deadline looms
Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has shown his support for England teammate and Reds summer transfer target Anthony Gordon. During the European Championships, talk of a move to the red half of Merseyside intensified after it had emerged that Newcastle United looked to offload the 23-year-old due to their Profit and Sustainability concerns.
The Magpies' fears were soon allayed with the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh but since then, links have never been too far away over a move to Liverpool for Gordon. Despite the interest and speculation, the wideman reunited with Eddie Howe and his side for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
On Sunday, he proved his importance to the squad as he contributed a crucial equaliser during their controversial draw away at AFC Bournemouth. Gordon poked home at the back post with 14 minutes remaining, cancelling out Marcus Tavernier's opener - Andoni Iraola thought they snatched a late winner when Dango Ouattara rose highest to beat Nick Pope, however his effort was contentiously ruled out for handball.
"Off the mark! Thank you to everyone that travelled," Gordon posted on Instagram to 455,000 followers. His post prompted comments, including one from Liverpool midfielder Jones.
The Reds academy graduate missed the 2-0 win over Brentford through injury as he replied to Gordon's post with a fire emoji. The pair have a strong relationship due to their roots on Merseyside.
Gordon has previously described his England under-21 teammate as one of his best friends in football. "I'd say I've got three," he told Gary Neville. "Curtis Jones, Tommy Doyle, Elliot Anderson. Mixed bag there. Some club, some international."
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe admitted that he can't promise that Gordon will remain at St James' Park but the Magpies will do everything to keep the "difference-maker".
He said, via Northern Echo: "I’ve seen Anthony come back in a good place. Especially this past week, he had a really short training period before that first game. We put him in as he’s a difference maker, it takes the younger players less time to get up to speed but I think this week he has looked back to his best.
"I have been in the game too long to make those statements [on whether Gordon could join Liverpool]. What I will say is from my part and the club’s part we will do everything we can to keep our best players but I am not a fortune teller."
