With the transfer window now over, it seems the agenda of off-field chatter regarding Liverpool centres around contracts. Of course, it is no secret that the Reds have three of their biggest stars in the final years of their deal.

While the ECHO understands that Mohamed Salah is keen to stay, there is more ambiguity over Trent Alexander-Arnold as there is with Virgil van Dijk. The defender has been linked with Real Madrid and a recent interview has left some fans pensive.

“I've always said that I want to captain the club,” he told the ECHO and other reporters on Saturday. “That is an aim of mine and a goal of mine, (but) whether that happens is out of my hands. I want to be a Liverpool player this season (as a minimum) is what I will say.”

Meanwhile, reports suggest that one of Alexander-Arnold’s teammate could be in line for a new deal.

Diaz ‘set’ for contract talks

Liverpool are thought to be planning contract talks with Luis Diaz. That’s according to Teamtalk, which claims that the club wish to tie him down to a renewal to fend off potential interest next year.

Diaz has not penned a new deal since arriving in January 2022, leading to links with Barcelona and other rivals over the summer. The report moots that discussions are set to commence ‘imminently’ with hopes of a quick process.

The 27-year-old still has just under three years left on his Anfield contract and there is little fear that he would leave as things stand. It is being suggested that Diaz is indeed happy at the club and is open to inking a fresh two-year extension.

Murphy: Alexander-Arnold comments worrying

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes Alexander-Arnold’s interview comments might suggest that the right-back is open to leaving the club. Links with Real Madrid have persisted amid his contract situation and Murphy says Liverpool might not be guaranteed to secure a renewal.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the pundit said: “Trent looks as good as I’ve seen him in years physically, which is now helping his 1-on-1 defending. He looks quicker, sharper and stronger than I’ve seen him in a long, long time.

“The interview he did… some of his answers are a tad worrying for me, about his future. If he did go to Madrid a lot of Liverpool fans would understand.

“The fact is… his wording in that interview to me suggests he’s open to the idea of going somewhere else and that’s concerning.”
