Liverpool transfer 'surprise' as Arne Slot closes in on first arrival
There is just over a week to go until the summer transfer window closes, and Liverpool are one of the clubs who will be looking to do business between now and then. The Reds are yet to make a new signing in the window, but that could be about to change.
For new head coach Arne Slot, concentration will largely be on matters on the pitch with the new Premier League season now underway. The team got off to the perfect start under the Dutchman at the weekend.
Goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool a comfortable 2-0 win over newly-promoted Ipswich Town. It was a game that may have been seen as a potential banana skin with the Tractor Boys returning to the top-flight for the first time in 22 years.
Eyes will now turn to building on that win. Slot’s side return to on Sunday when they take on Brentford at Anfield (4.30pm kick off).
But could any transfer business done between now and then? The ECHO takes a look at some of the latest stories doing the rounds.
Liverpool transfer surprise
Pundit Ally McCoist 'would be surprised' if Liverpool let Joe Gomez leave this summer, despite the talks surrounding the defender’s future. Gomez was left out of the matchday squad for the Reds’ Premier League opener against Ipswich on Saturday afternoon.
It was revealed that his omission was due to discussions over his future at the club. Since several clubs have been linked with a move for the player, with McCoist giving his thoughts on the situation.
"I think he would be a good signing for anybody," he said on talkSPORT. "I think he would be a good signing for Villa, good signing for Newcastle. I would be surprised if Liverpool let him go at this moment in time.
"I really would, I genuinely would. He can play anywhere across the backline, and that gives him a great appeal particularly with clubs I think he would be well suited to, Newcastle and indeed Villa. But I would be really surprised if Liverpool let him go."
Reds ‘close in’ on first transfer
Liverpool are ‘closing in’ on the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili. But the goalkeeper may not arrive at Anfield until next season. Sky Sports report that the club have offered an initial £25.6 million plus £4.3 million in add-ons to Valencia for the 23-year-old.
The deal is also likely to see the player stay on loan at the Spanish club for the current season. It comes after he was linked with a loan deal to Bournemouth, but it is said that the player himself would prefer to stay with Valencia.
The signing is seen as a long term one with the goalkeeper earmarked as a potential future replacement for Allison Becker. If a deal is completed he will become the first new signing of the summer and the first arrival under Slot.
