Liverpool vs Arsenal: Arsene Wenger drops Alexis Sanchez for tactical reasons despite Mesut Ozil absence

Arsene Wenger has dropped Alexis Sanchez for Arsenal's crucial Premier League clash against Liverpool for tactical reasons rather than fitness issues.

Standard Sport revealed last night that playmaker Mesut Ozil would miss the trip to Anfield due to illness, and Sanchez also misses out as Arsenal battle for Champions League qualification with Liverpool.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain starts on the right flank with Danny Welbeck on the left, while Alex Iwobi occupies the No.10 role with Olivier Giroud up front.

Standard Sport's James Olley confirmed that Sanchez's presence on the bench is down to Wenger's tactics rather than any fitness concerns over the Chilean.

Arsenal tweeted out pre-match quotes from Wenger regarding his selection for the match, with the coach saying: "We’re going with Giroud and Welbeck up front because we will need to be a bit more direct and strong in the air."

More to follow.
