Liverpool 2-2 Man City LIVE! Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Liverpool vs Manchester City - LIVE!

Two Premier League title rivals played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Sadio Mane gave resurgent Liverpool the lead just shy of the hour mark after a hugely disappointing first half from the hosts.

However, man of the match Phil Foden rifled in to restore parity just 10 minutes later, with Mo Salah then scoring for the seventh game in a row with a fantastic individual effort.

A furious Pep Guardiola felt James Milner should have been shown a second yellow card shortly before that second Liverpool goal.

Joel Matip then inadvertently deflected in Kevin De Bruyne’s strike as the goals flew in during a pulsating second period on Merseyside.

There was also a hugely crucial block from Rodri to deny Fabinho as both sides pushed for a late winner.

The result leaves still unbeaten Liverpool second in the table and City third, with Chelsea a point clear at the summit heading into the October international break.

Salah one of the best in the world, says Klopp

19:52 , Giuseppe Muro

Jurgen Klopp has hailed Mohamed Salah as one of the best players on the planet after his “world-class” goal this afternoon.

“If Leo Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo score that goal then the world says it's world class,” said Klopp.

“He (Salah) is one of the best players in the world, that's how it is." Salah has started the season in sparkling form and has now scored six goals in the Premier League.

Klopp: Draw a fair result

19:19 , Giuseppe Muro

The Liverpool manager speaking to Sky Sports: "Thank god a football game has two halves. We are really happy about the second and not so happy about the first for obvious reasons.

“We did a lot of things wrong in the first half and City did a lot of things right in the first half so we never got really in the game. We weren't much worse, we never played enough football. I was most happy in my career about the half-time whistle. It was never planned that we played like this and we needed half-time and we used half-time and played a really good second half.

"Man City with the ball is a proper team. There are ways to defend it. They had chances clear but they didn't score from that. It gives you a really bad feeling which leads to not playing football. We had long balls which didn't make sense.

“All these things we changed in the second half immediately. We were now in the game and scored wonderful goals with the ball. The message was to play the extra pass. We didn't do that in the first half at all.

“Do we want to win a game like this? Yes. We have to admit today the point is completely fine.”

Mo Salah reaction

19:18 , Giuseppe Muro

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Liverpol goalscorer said: "It's hard because they keep a ball a lot. The first half not really good but the second half we played good. This is the result so we have to accept it.

"They dominated the game from the beginning. We struggled first half but at least when we struggled it was 0-0. We talked in the dressing room and I think we played good in the second half.

"I have to be fair. They create a lot of chances, they keep the ball a lot. I wish I could say no but it's fair to say yes. They had a lot of chances and a draw is a fair result."

Guardiola: Milner should have been sent off

19:17 , Giuseppe Muro

The Manchester City boss here speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "If you ask me about the points of course I am happy if you ask me about the performance I am more than happy.

"The way we have played the last three games has been magnificent. We have played a lot of players and they have all played with personality and personality and unfortunately we could not win.

"We overcame two results, 1-0 down and 2-1 down and incredible personality from the team.

"It was a yellow card, it was too obvious. I know for referees it is not easy at Anfield and Old Trafford, there is a lot of pressure for everyone. Football is about emotions but it is obvious it is a yellow card.

"Against this team, one of the three best teams in the world those small margins can make a difference. Bernardo Silva was free and the way [James] Milner stopped it the ref knows it was a yellow card.

"I am very pleased with the way we played."

Phil Foden reaction

18:48 , George Flood

Here’s man of the match Phil Foden speaking to Sky Sports...

“It’s very difficult to come here with the fans. It’s one of the most difficult grounds to come to, and I thought we dealt with it really well today.

“It had it all, it was end-to-end at times. It was such a brilliant game, we stuck in there until the end and we’re happy to get a draw, and on another day we could have got the three points.

“It was quite disappointing not to go in at half-time ahead, but we kept the momentum and dug in.”

Full-time

Liverpool 2-2 Man City

What a second half!

The points are shared.

Liverpool stay second, with City up to third.

Chelsea a point clear at the top.

18:23 , George Flood

94 mins: City force a late, late corner but both teams look out on their feet now after a pulsating second half.

This will end all square.

18:22 , George Flood

92 mins: This is frantic, frantic stuff in stoppage time!

Either side could still win it...

18:20 , George Flood

90 mins: Sterling and De Bruyne can’t quite fashion a chance as both sides push for a winner.

Foden named man of the match as we head into FOUR minutes of added time.

Is there another twist in the tale to come?!

Sterling almost sent clear...

18:16 , George Flood

87 mins: A potentially point-saving block from Rodri, whose superb sliding intervention denies Fabinho after Ederson made an absolute hash of a free-kick to the back post.

18:13 , George Flood

83 mins: Into the final 10 minutes and this contest is wonderfully poised.

Walker smashes a City free-kick well over.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-2 Manchester City | Kevin De Bruyne 81'

18:10 , George Flood

81 mins: Foden can’t quite pick out Walker and the ball falls kindly to De Bruyne, whose shot is deflected in by Matip!

Goals galore now at Anfield. It’s hard to keep up.

Great drama.

18:09 , George Flood

77 mins: Guardiola and Bernardo were both booked for their protests in the aftermath of that Salah goal.

They were furious that Milner wasn’t sent off just minutes before.

Milner is now off, but replaced rather than dismissed.

Joe Gomez on.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-1 Manchester City | Mo Salah 76'

18:05 , George Flood

76 mins: What a goal! Vintage Mo Salah.

Sublime skill gets him away from Foden, Cancelo and Bernardo.

He then twists and turns to leave Laporte in his wake before blasting beyond Ederson.

Just brilliant. He’s now scored in seven straight games.

18:03 , George Flood

72 mins: Milner - already on a yellow - has just very cynically tripped Bernardo on the far side and Guardiola appeals frantically for a red card.

Somehow referee Paul Tierney disagrees.

That is a huge decision in the context of this match.

How is that not a second yellow?! Guardiola is absolutely furious.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City | Phil Foden 69'

17:58 , George Flood

69 mins: All square once more!

De Bruyne finds Gabriel Jesus, who skips past Salah and Fabinho before playing the ball across to Foden.

His first touch is heavy and makes the angle tougher, but he makes up for it with a fantastic low strike into the far corner.

Brilliant finish.

17:57 , George Flood

67 mins: That’s poor from Gabriel Jesus as he has options inside the Liverpool box but shoots tamely straight at Milner.

Firmino for Jota is Klopp’s first change.

17:55 , George Flood

65 mins: Jota flies into De Bruyne and is rightly cautioned.

Ex-Liverpool man Sterling roundly booed by the home crowd as he replaces Grealish.

City’s free-kick from the right is easily cleared.

17:54 , George Flood

63 mins: Guardiola will be demanding calm from his City side here as they’ve gone to pieces somewhat.

Sterling is going to replace Grealish shortly.

17:52 , George Flood

61 mins: For all their first-half dominance, City look really shaky now as Liverpool continue to pour forward and Salah whips a free-kick narrowly wide of the front post.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Man City | Sadio Mane 59'

17:47 , George Flood

59 mins: The classic Salah to Mane connection sees resurgent Liverpool break the deadlock just shy of the hour mark!

It’s good football from Liverpool over on that right-hand side and Fabinho picks out Salah, who drives forward with pace and purpose.

He runs past Rodri too easily and into space before playing in Mane, who slips the ball beyond Ederson and into the back of the net.

That’s Mane’s 99th Premier League goal!

17:45 , George Flood

55 mins: City try to get their foot back on the ball and take the sting out of this Liverpool resurgence.

There’s a good interception from Milner, who is then dragged down by Cancelo. Yellow card.

A Liverpool free-kick is headed safely into the arms of Ederson.

17:44 , George Flood

54 mins: VAR checking that challenge from Cancelo on Salah as the crowd get right behind improving Liverpool and the tempo rises once more.

He did tread on his foot but got the ball first.

17:43 , George Flood

53 mins: Positive goalkeeping from Ederson as he punches clear Milner’s free-kick following a Walker foul on Jota and then claims the second ball to the back post, launching City forward on the counter.

17:40 , George Flood

50 mins: Much better from Liverpool as Matip fizzes a low pass through midfield and into the feet of Jota, who smartly turns Dias and then unleashes a low strike that is parried by Ederson.

Laporte then manages to head the loose ball back to his goalkeeper.

17:38 , George Flood

48 mins: Liverpool have upped the tempo already after what I’m sure were some choice words from a frustrated Klopp at half-time.

The ball breaks nicely for Jota after Henderson dispossesses Rodri, but he tries to change direction back towards Salah instead of playing in Mane and Rodri makes the recovery challenge.

17:37 , George Flood

46 mins: Liverpool try to get Milner involved offensively at the start of this second period, combining with Salah before producing a probing low cross that is well held by Ederson.

Second half

17:34 , George Flood

Back underway at Anfield.

No changes from either manager.

17:34 , George Flood

The teams are back out at Anfield.

No sign of a first Liverpool change just yet, despite that poor first half.

Klopp must have been sorely tempted to take off Milner at the interval.

He was dominated by Foden in that first half and is on a yellow.

Should Man City have had a penalty?

Toothless Reds

17:23 , George Flood

Half-time

17:19 , George Flood

Liverpool 0-0 Manchester City

The visitors firmly on top, but Alisson twice denied the excellent Foden, who has the beating of Milner all day long down that City left.

De Bruyne also headed over the bar.

Liverpool woeful after an initially positive start and will be glad to get in at 0-0.

17:18 , George Flood

45 mins: Just the one minute of added time signalled at the end of this first half.

17:17 , George Flood

44 mins: Foden is away from Milner (not for the first time today) and collects a sublime long pass from his own goalkeeper Ederson, but the latter’s pal Alisson is quick to come out and deny the England midfielder once more with a key sliding challenge.

What a ball from Ederson. Wow.

17:15 , George Flood

42 mins: A deserved yellow card for ex-City man Milner, who hauls down Foden and then gets told where to go by the travelling fans.

Foden’s whipped low free-kick then flashes across the box and wide. No one gambled or was ready for that.

17:14 , George Flood

41 mins: Yet more sustained City pressure ends with Gabriel Jesus falling under pressure from Matip and wanting a free-kick.

He doesn’t get one. Liverpool look tired and sloppy - Klopp will be preparing the hairdryer for half-time.

17:12 , George Flood

39 mins: De Bruyne and Rodri try their luck before Liverpool then again twice give the ball away cheaply, much to the annoyance of Klopp and this home crowd.

The Reds are all over the place at the moment. They will be hugely fortunate if they get in at half-time at 0-0.

17:10 , George Flood

37 mins: City really turning the screw now as two dangerous crosses are repelled.

Guardiola will be desperate for his side to capitalise on this dominant period before the half-time whistle.

17:09 , George Flood

36 mins: Liverpool have seriously lost their way after a lively start here.

They are trying to force things and just consistently handing possession straight back to City.

Gary Neville calls them ‘one-dimensional’ on Sky Sports. A fair assessment.

17:06 , George Flood

34 mins: Another big chance for City!

Mane can’t track the run of De Bruyne, who has a free header as he stoops to try and send Foden’s cross goal-bound.

However, the ball flies harmlessly over the top. He should have done much better with that.

17:05 , George Flood

33 mins: That initial contact from Milner was outside the box, but it continued inside.

No doubt that was a foul, with Foden hurt by trying to stay on his feet initially.

That certainly won’t be the last we hear of that incident.

17:04 , George Flood

31 mins: Foden appeals passionately for a penalty after being clipped clumsily by Milner and trying to stay on his feet, then going down and looking at the referee, who isn’t interested. This will be checked by the VAR.

Grealish then fires over. Before that, Dias with a heart-stopping test of Ederson’s reflexes!

17:01 , George Flood

29 mins: City work through Liverpool’s now more aggressive press and Grealish finds Foden, who beats Henderson wonderfully before trying to slot a through ball ahead to De Bruyne, who hadn’t made the required run.

Foden not happy with his team-mate at all there.

17:00 , George Flood

27 mins: Ederson tries to set City away on a counter but ends up gifting possession straight back to Liverpool, with Robertson then earning a corner and getting the home crowd back into this.

But the delivery from the left-hand side is disappointing and easily dealt with.

16:58 , George Flood

25 mins: The first yellow card of the afternoon goes to Ruben Dias, who loses his footing and then drags down compatriot Jota to prevent him from breaking clear.

Dias claims he was fouled first, but referee Paul Tierney is not having any of it.

16:56 , George Flood

23 mins: Liverpool try to get a solid foothold back in this game as they put another ball into the box and an increasingly irate Klopp urges them to “be brave” from the touchline.

But here come confident City again as Cancelo has all the time in the world to release De Bruyne, who has Gabriel Jesus in the middle but his flashed cross is hit far too hard for the Brazilian and goes safe.

City well on top now.

16:52 , George Flood

21 mins: That’s a big save from Alisson to deny Foden! First key chance of the game goes to City.

It’s fantastic from Bernardo, who wins possession from Henderson in midfield and then skips away from multiple challenges, including a laboured one from Van Dijk before playing a fine ball through to Foden.

However, the England man hesitates ever so slightly as Alisson rushes out to block.

16:52 , George Flood

20 mins: City opt for a short corner and Grealish fires it across to De Bruyne, but the Liverpool defence get out so quickly and leave four or five sky blue shirts offside as Foden heads the Belgian’s cross well wide.

16:51 , George Flood

18 mins: A poor clearance from Alisson picks out Bernardo and puts Liverpool in danger.

The Portuguese releases Gabriel Jesus, whose low cross is blocked behind for another City corner by Matip.

The champions are shifting up a gear here after a quiet start.

16:49 , George Flood

16 mins: A key header from Robertson at the back post after Foden is released down that left channel and lays the ball back for the supporting Bernardo Silva to deliver a deep cross.

Alisson does well with the subsequent corner and Liverpool clear.

16:47 , George Flood

14 mins: Grealish has Matip back-pedalling in his own box, but he doesn’t really drive at him and instead opts for a shot that is easily blocked.

16:44 , George Flood

11 mins: A well-worked Liverpool move sees Matip loft the ball out to Milner, who cuts it back for Salah.

There’s then a quick lay-off to Henderson, who tries to swing in a cross that is well cleared by Laporte.

16:41 , George Flood

9 mins: All a bit pedestrian and static from City so far.

Not happening for them on the counter and it’s all a bit slow when they do get on the ball.

A low pass intended for the run of Gabriel Jesus trickles behind for an Alisson goal kick.

16:40 , George Flood

7 mins: More positive, quick play from Liverpool and Henderson earns a corner that is just a whisker too high for the leaping Matip.

Salah’s hopeful effort is then charged down as Klopp’s side continue to push for an early opener.

16:37 , George Flood

5 mins: Liverpool on the front foot as Salah tussles with Cancelo and a dangerous cross is aimed towards Mane, with Laporte on hand again to head away.

Jota later lurks menacingly as the ball runs through to a grateful Ederson.

16:36 , George Flood

4 mins: A searching ball towards Grealish is overhit and goes out of play for a Liverpool goal kick as the Reds then come forward quickly and try to get Mane free.

16:34 , George Flood

2 mins: Unsurprisingly between these two attacking powerhouses, there is a great early tempo to this one with the crowd bang up for it.

Laporte has to be alert to turn away an early cross from Henderson.

Frantic stuff already.

Klopp frustrated by Covid vaccine reluctance among players

15:01 , George Flood

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has received praise this week for his comments on Covid-19 vaccinations, expressing frustration with the reluctance of some Premier League players to get jabbed.

"I got the vaccination because I was concerned about myself but even more so for everyone else around me," Klopp said.

He added: "Where did I get the knowledge from that I think it makes sense to get the vaccination? I called doctors who I've known for years.

"Most specialists tell us the vaccination is the solution for the situation in this moment."

Guardiola reflects on Man City bus attack

14:51 , George Flood

Manchester City’s team bus was attacked before a Champions League quarter-final tie at Anfield back in 2018, but Guardiola does not expect a repeat of those disgraceful scenes ever again.

“Hopefully, I wish it is never going to happen ever again,” he said.

Asked how bad that experience was this week, Guardiola said: “You cannot imagine, but I am pretty sure the Liverpool police and the Liverpool people understand the situation is not going to happen again.”

14:45 , George Flood

Liverpool are the Premier League’s last unbeaten team in 2012/22 and it is now 16 matches (stretching back to last season) since they lasted tasted defeat - the longest such record in English football’s top four divisions.

And while Guardiola is aware of the tough task facing City today, he is generally pleased with the way his side have always competed against Liverpool, even in defeat.

"The first season we played there we lost 1-0, the game was not good. We didn't play,” he said.

"The rest we were really good, even losing 3-0 in the Champions League. In many games we've shown incredible personality going there.

"An away fixture at Anfield is always one of the toughest ones.

"In the last two or three or four years, we were there, all the time. That is the biggest compliment we can get as a club. It is the best. We want to continue to be there."

Guardiola: I still get big-game nerves

14:38 , George Flood

Never one to shy away from big occasions such as today, Pep Guardiola said at his pre-match conference that “football isn’t for you” if you don’t still feel that mix of excitement, nerves and pressure ahead of such a high-profile encounter.

"All these kind of feelings have to be there - excitement, nervousness, pressure, emotions," he said.

"If you don't have those feelings in important games, like the previous ones or for the biggest ones, this business is not for you.

"Maybe you don't sleep better the day before, or sleep good when it's over or not if the performance is not good, but this is how you live this life.

"I still have it before the games. If you don't feel that you are not for the business. You have to feel it."

Standard Sport prediction

14:31 , George Flood

Man City ran riot in a 4-1 triumph on Merseyside back in February, a statement moment as they went on to ease to Premier League title glory.

Liverpool have scored three or more goals in six straight games for only the third time in club history, though Klopp has faced questions over their defending despite the return of Virgil van Dijk this term.

City, meanwhile, have conceded just once in their opening six Premier League games and that was back on opening day.

You get the feeling that it could be any score when these two attacking powerhouses go head to head, but we’ll plump for an entertaining draw that, as ever, won’t be short on drama and talking points.

Liverpool 2-2 Man City

14:27 , George Flood

Here is how Standard Sport expects both teams to line up on Merseyside this afternoon:

Liverpool predicted XI: Alisson; Milner, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Jones; Salah, Jota, Mane.

Man City predicted XI: Ederson, Walker, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo, Rodri, Bernardo, De Bruyne, Foden, Jesus, Grealish.

Man City team news

Liverpool team news

14:25 , George Flood

Liverpool will be without Trent Alexander-Arnold after he was ruled out due to an adductor issue.

Alexander-Arnold missed Tuesday’s 5-1 win over FC Porto in the Champions League and Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he will not be available to face City at Anfield.

It means James Milner is set to continue at right-back.

Long-term absentee Harvey Elliott (ankle) is obviously still sidelined, as is midfielder Thiago Alcantara, who is still struggling with a calf problem.
