Llanberis incident: Bomb squad detonate device that shut road for two hours

The bomb squad detonated "unexploded ordinance" found at the side North Wales road. The device was discovered near to the A4086 at Llanberis, Gwynedd.

The discovery forced the closure of the road as a precaution for around two hours. North Wales Police and army bomb disposal experts attended the scene.

The road was closed at around 2pm by North Wales Police and the device was detonated at around 4pm. The closure caused disruption with Ysgol Brynrefail pupils from Llanberis facing a 36-mile diversion via Capel Curig to get home. There were unconfirmed reports that Ffordd Clegir, a mountain road linking Llanberis with Llanrug, was blocked.

The detonation was confirmed in a statement posted on the the NWP Gwynedd North Facebook page: "This afternoon police received a report of a potential unexploded ordnance being found near A4086. As per protocol a cordon was put in place on the advice of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD).

"The device was made safe by the EOD via a controlled explosion. We apologise for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for your understanding."
