Local residents evacuated after bomb squad called to 'suspicions package' near burning van

An investigation is underway after Lennoxtown residents were evacuated last night after a 'suspicions package' was found near a burning van.

Emergency services rushed to Benvue Road in the town at around 11.20pm on Saturday, June 8, following reports of a vehicle fire. Crews were forced to call in a bomb squad units after a 'suspicious package' was found near the vehicle.

Residents were evacuated to a local community centre as a precaution. Officers locked down a section of the road as a cordon was placed around the van.

Authorities say that the package was made safe following an 'Explosive Ordnance Disposal'. Residents report that police are still at the scene and a burned-out BT van is visible on the street.

One local said: "Someone blew up a van that sits behind our house. I was woken at 3am by police telling us to evacuate. Bomb disposal were there with robots and an army major.

"Ben Vue road was shut at Meikle Bin Brae with police, ambulance and fire also in attendance."

There have been no reported injuries.

Officers say enquires are ongoing into the incident and a presence will remain in the area while the probe continues.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.20pm on Saturday, June 8, 2024, police received a report of a van on fire at Benvue Road, Lennoxtown. The fire was extinguished and no-one was injured.

“A suspect item was found at the vehicle and this has been made safe by Explosive Ordnance Disposal. A number of properties were evacuated as a precaution.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and a police presence will remain in the area while this work is ongoing.”
