Residents in one of the first regions to have their bins collected only once a month have complained of having to incinerate waste.

Other have reported having to stand in their dustbins to squash down their waste in a desperate attempt to create more space.

The scheme is being trialled in Conwy, North Wales, but residents say that the four-week collection trial has caused them misery since it was introduced four months ago.

The system is also being trialled across areas of Scotland too, and it is believed that more councils are planning to shift their schedules to a monthly system.

Food waste, nappies and recycling bins are collected once a week in Conwy – but general waste bins are collected only once every four weeks.

Conservative assembly member Darren Millar has now claimed that multiple fly-tipping incidents have been witnessed in the area after the scheme was introduced.

He said: ‘Four weeks is a long time for waste to be left, particularly in warmer weather.

‘Worse still, if people miss a bin collection for some reason then waste could be sat in bins for up to eight weeks; it simply isn’t good enough.’

But a council spokesperson has hit back at the claims, and says that recycling has increased by 15 percent after the scheme was introduced.

‘We do advise residents use recycling centres to dispose of extra waste, but it would be much better to recycle it in the first place’, they said.

The backlash comes only a month after Derby City Council encouraged residents to put their rubbish in the freezer to prevent odours after bin collections were cancelled over Christmas and New Year.
