A planned housing development in a Cambridgeshire village has been recommended for refusal. The plans would have seen 33 new homes being built on land near Sutton Road in Leverington.

The application was put forward by Swann Edwards Architecture in November 2019. A range of two, three and four-bed detached and semi-detached properties had been earmarked for the site.

However, a number of locals have expressed concerns regarding overcrowding in the village. Objections were also raised to the potential increase in traffic that would be brought about by this development.

One person said: "Sutton Road simply cannot cope with any more traffic from new housing. The existing development has in my opinion pushed Sutton Road to its absolute limits."

Another person commented: "We have just had 220 houses built on the opposite side of the road. The parish of Leverington has just one shop, one public house and a very small village school. I feel we do not have the amenities or infrastructure for yet more homes."

Others have spoken out in support of the application, with one person saying that Leverington was in "desperate need of new housing developments". Another comment said: "I support this proposal and feel this is an appropriate place for new houses with good links to Leverington and Wisbech."

Planning officers recommended that the plans be refused due to the impact of the development on highway safety. They added that a substantial part of the proposed site was at high risk of flooding.

A decision on the application is due to be made by Fenland District Council on Wednesday (September 18). The plans can be viewed in full on the council's planning portal, using the reference F/YR19/0944/O or clicking here.
