Lofty and Mary to return to EastEnders after 30 years

Two characters who appeared in the some of the first ever storylines in EastEnders are to return to the BBC soap, according to reports.

Lofty Holloway and Mary Smith, members of the show's original cast, will be back on the show next years, reports The Sun.

Actors Tom Watt and Linda Davidson were last seen in Albert Square in 1988, and will reprise their roles as former barman lofty and Mary, the punk groupie turned stripper.

The pair will arrive on set at Elstree Studios 'in the coming days'.

They will be part of the plot that will follow the death of another show veteran, Dr Legg, played by 92-year-old actor Leonard Fenton.

A source told the newspaper: "Lofty and Mary The Punk are two of the most memorable characters of the original set of stars.

"It's staggering to think it's been more than 30 years since they were last on the Square but soap fans will be delighted to hear of their comeback.

"Regular viewers will know Dr Legg's health is bad and it's thought his death will play out in February next year, and these two will be back around the time of his funeral."

Luckless Lofty appeared in the third episode of the soap in 1985, and was noted for his failed marriage to Michelle Fowler, who he left after she had a secret abortion.

62-year-old Tom Watt, the actor who played him, later became a sports reporter and broadcaster, ghost-writing David Beckham's autobiography, My Side.

Mary, meanwhile, played by Linda Davidson, was a wayward young mum on the soap, a former punk groupie who later became a stripper to make ends meet.

Davidson, 54, went on to appear in shows like Casualty, The Bill and First of the Summer Wine, later quit acting to launch her own media agency.
