Logan director joins Star Wars for Boba Fett film

From Digital Spy

The long-awaited Star Wars Story for Boba Fett looks to be finally be happening.

After years of talk that Lucasfilm was prepping a standalone movie based on The Empire Strikes Back's badass bounty hunter, the project seems to have finally taking off.

According toThe Hollywood Reporter, Disney and Lucasfilm are forging ahead with Logan filmmaker James Mangold, who is on board to both write and direct the untitled film.

The exact details are being kept under wraps as per usual with Lucasfilm, and it's not yet known if Mangold is working on the same Boba Fett project that his X-Men collaborator Simon Kinberg was recently developing.

The silent, helmeted assassin first appeared in animated form in The Star Wars Holiday Special, before tracking Han Solo (Harrison Ford) in live-action in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Boba Fett's popularity has taken on a life of its own since then, and he was mentioned back in 2013 among the characters that Disney wanted to focus on for standalone Star Wars movies.

Josh Trank was hired to direct and got far into development, before the plug was apparently pulled by Lucasfilm following the backlash to the filmmaker's reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise.

The Boba Fett project will fit into the growing Star Wars Story, along with Rogue One and Solo - the latter of which is now playing in UK cinemas and opens on Friday (May 25) in the US. Book tickets here.

There's also talk that Ewan McGregor is in talks to reprise his role from George Lucas's Star Wars prequels for an Obi-wan Kenobi solo movie, to be directed by Stephen Daldry.

Meanwhile, James Mangold is quite literally gearing up this summer to turn the rivalry between Ford vs Ferrari into a big-budget movie that's bound to please the petrol-starved Fast and Furious crowd.
