Logan director James Mangold has spoken out about the current state of studios' major money-spinner releases – multiple-character franchise movies, which are a set up for a sequel, clearly do nothing for him.

Talking to KCRW, Mangold said: "Tentpole movies in general... they are not movies, generally.

"They are bloated exercises in two-hour trailers for another movie they are going to sell you in two years.

"There are so many characters that each character gets an arc of about six-and-a-half minutes at best, and I'm not exaggerating. You take 120 minutes, you take 45 of it for action, what are you left with? Divide it by six characters, you have the character arc of Elmer Fudd in a Warner Bros cartoon. That formula is empty for me."

Though Logan has been a massive financial success, so far taking $184m in the States alone – twice its budget – Mangold and star Hugh Jackman clearly wanted to buck the trend of current superhero films.

Like Deadpool, it was R-rated, and though it exists within the X-Men universe and features mutants with special powers, the 'superhero' element took a backseat to character, story and tone.

It also moves away from the urge to cast beautiful 20-somethings, instead focusing on a middle-aged broken alcoholic, a 70-something playing a 90-something, and an 11-year-old girl.

And then of course there was the ending - no spoilers this time - but if you've seen the film you'll know it certainly bucks the trend.

Will it change things? Will studios stop spreading their material too thin, making lowest-common-denominator 'two-hour trailers'? It's possible. Seems like for now Mangold and Jackman are stepping away from the genre altogether.
